To Res or not to Res.....

Post by greyingfast » Sun Aug 25, 2013 10:49 am

Hi,

I am looking to put a Milltek cat back system on my car. The choice seems to be all down to personal choice as to going with resonated or non-resonated. Any advice much appreciated from anyone who has had to make the same decision. Car isn't used all the time, well it is at the moment as its new to me, and I cant stay out of it. But long term it will be used with the family every now and then, but mainly used to maintain the petrol levels in my blood.

Is there anyone around the South West who has one of these systems, and would be happy for me to meet you and have a look/listen to it?

Thanks

Non res sounds great, however, there is an irritating background drone....

Slight drone at lower RPMs with a bit of load on the engine, but a non issue IMO. Mine is a daily, driven mostly by my wife now, who hasn't noticed any 'noise'. I wish it was louder.

Go non-res.

Agree with Chunky - I do have gutted DP's and the Res is plenty loud enough, especially when cruising on M'ways etc - any more and it would be annoying.

Agreed. Depends if you have downpipes or not. But either way, even a res system is very loud outside. My wife pulled away the other day and Iw as surprised what a racket it makes from the outside. Main problem is that the RS6 is too well insulated, so you need a really loud system to be heard inside the car.

I found the non res to be really droney, but not much else.

Mart.

Ok I get the message. Non res it is then. Thanks for helping me make a decision that was 99% already there.

Res and non res sound virtually the same from the outside at full pelt.
Millys have an annoying habit of booming around 2-3k rpm and the resonator helps get rid of this, although not entirely.

i'd go Res ;)

you was right with your first post, you need to hear both options before you decide which is best for you

I know I'm pretty much on my own with this one, but I personally dislike the sound of the milteks on the RS6. Doesn't suit the character of the car.

Friend of mine removed his centre silencer and that gave the car a more meaty rumble without making it sound like a broken Chevy. Kept the same sound but just a bit louder.

Looks like I need to go exhaust listening soon. My wife already thinks I'm a sad git, cant wait to see her face when I explain that I'm just going to drive to another part of the country to listen to couple of RS6's...............................
