Mine won't kickdown at all when I'm in charge of shiftin'. MRC TCU.

+1, will not kick down in triptro with the MRC gearbox map. Plus as Shop says much better engine braking as the tc stays locked.
I did have a viper map in mine when I got it and it would kick down in triptro. That lasted about a week before I went to Banbury.

Interesting about the Viper TCU. I have one but haven't tried it. I'd be disappointed if it did kick down though. I'll have to stick it in.

Shop, as far as I know it had both Engine and Gearbox mapped by Viper. What I will say is that my car was probably one of the first to be done by him so he has probably learnt a lot more in the last 5/6 years.

Hmm, interesting discussion on this thread and here about TCU behaviour. I get the impression that there are lots of different behaviours out there.
Mine has an MRC TCU map. In drive, it behaves just like stock - well, maybe the shift points are slightly different, but if you give it some gas at low revs then it'll drop a gear. In tip, it'll hold the gear right up to WOT (and keep the TC locked on lift-off like Shoppinit says), but if I kick-down then it'll drop a few gears and lay some rubber. Just the way I like it, especially because it drops multiple gears in one step, rather than having to change down sequentially. Paddles make the car behave exactly as tip, so when I'm on the motorway in 5th and want to exploit all that torque to cruise past someone, I tap the '+' paddle to hold the gear for a few seconds, take it to WOT (but not kickdown - see below) and burn through without a gearchange: just like the OP mentioned.
Funny thing is, when my TC was dying (same map), the car was much more ready to drop a gear, presumably to limit the torque that was going through the 'box. This was even when in tip: WOT at low revs would drop one or even two gears. Drove me crazy, but completely fixed by new TC and 'box (checked with Doug at the time that the TCU remained unchanged). Moral? Well, maybe there isn't one, but I s'pose it's worth having your TC checked over if ever the car drops a gear when in tip and not kicked down.
Just to be sure I'm clear on the terminology, by WOT I mean accelerator depressed to the point at which it reaches the resistance of the kickdown button, and by kickdown I mean just beyond that (i.e. planted to the floor so that it 'clicks' past the kickdown step and can't travel any further).

I have MRC stage 2 tcu map, recon box and ACE torque converter and when in tip kickdown does nothing.

Great write up. Really looking forward to owning one. My last car was a 300c deisel so this will be great. Just want the solicitors to hurry up.
Been there and done that.
