6sp conversion

Post by boondocksts » Wed Jun 30, 2004 3:53 pm

Does anyone know if any tuning companies are planning on offering it? I saw that the MTM avant has a 6speed, and OC.T was supposedly working on one, or had one in a showroom in germany. does anyone know any details? thanks

6 speed conversions exist but no ordinary owner is going to want one, its far too expensive a proposition.
At least one of the "RS6"s with a 6 speed that is around is not a real RS6, but an S6 engine brought up to RS6 specification, this gives you as clue to the true costs, if this is an easier option.
I could see somebody doing it for EUR 10,000 a car if there were 20 that were waiting to be converted, but on a one off basis the programming costs make all the not inconsiderable engineering costs look laughable, so expect no change from EUR 20,000, first time up.

I'm sure they can - as can Champion in the US and some guys in Europe. But if you have to program a complete Bosch Motronic ECU from scratch - to manufacturers standards so the engine can't grenade itself, it gets very expensive. using a race program is not acceptable for a road car because it doesn't have all the safeguards built in. So, sadly, one can't just 'do a deal' with Champion.
Traditionally, Audi have made more use of the capabilities of the Motronics unit than other manufacturers so there is more work to do than there is with, say, a Mercedes.
