Daily driver?

Post by GarethRS » Tue Feb 21, 2012 6:57 pm

Hi all,

I know this has been discussed in the past and some people have some very strong opinions!

However in the current climate with fuel prices going upwards, just wondered who used their 6 for their daily commute?

I about 2 years ago, brought an old golf Cabrio for summer use for the family but it's ended up doing my daily commute @ 50 miles a day. My old golf is starting to go south so I'm going to have to replace it.

This is where my wife and I disagree. She thinks that I should get one car that I can afford to use all the time, whereas I would rather keep the RS for summer and fun miles and a diesel for work!
Bearing in mind that I have a young family and my "personal time" is limited and the wife had a car and I also have a bike (hence her issue!)

Open for discussion
(written on a mobile device so spelling / grammar might be rubbish!)

I used to have the RS6 as only transport (except the Fireblade) but when it went on it's holidays to Grizz for 6+ weeks i needed a daily hack and bought a fully loaded mk4 Golf gti. Last week i decided the Golf was too good to use as hack and a friend wanted a deal on his high mileage E61 525d Msport. I'm worrinygly chuffed to pieces with the BMW, it's 2 years newer than my RS6 but light years ahead in the technology department and considering it weighs almost the same as my 6 handles very well. I'm starting to understand why Eddie Cain jumped ship to the M5.

Please help me i think i'm sick / having a breakdown i could never do without all that torque and quattro grip:)

Bilko, you thought the MK4 Golf was too good as a daily driver so got an even better daily driver? I'm sorry, but the MK4 Golf is just front wheel drive four pot hatchback, the E61 525D is a much much better car. You have a great combo there IMO.
Gareth, do the sums and see if it works out for you. I have worked out, and I would save a good few hundred every month by running a daily (my BMW went recently - not updated my sig) I was looking at a brand new Corsa but it is just too slow, but if I did buy that, even after insurance etc... it would save me a lot every month. Currently the RS6 is my daily driver, but I can see myself picking something up soon as it does make sense. Peugoet are doing a deal for £119 a month with no deposit on their small crappy model, dirt cheap to run and quicker then the Corsa but I've not bought a car on finance before and couldn't afford to buy a second new car outright, so I would need to look into that in more detail... I could get a £200 crappy Fiesta but I would rather have something new and dependable with a warranty. I couldn't be doing with having two cars that could potentially cost me a lot of money out of the blue, of course if it is only a £200 Fiesta then I could just scrap it and get another. Loads of pros and cons and quite a personal thing, it will work for some, not others.

Amar the Golf was mint and fully loaded, The E61 is far from mint and i won't think twice about throwing a load of crap in the back and doing a dump run, also there was no way i'd let the dog in the Golf but with the BMW it won't bother me.

Sorry, my sister has a MK4 GT TDI 1.9 Golf, I don't know if it is fully loaded. But it is a 130 BHP version with full black leather recaro heated seats on an 03 plate, I detest that thing. Every time I've driven it I've cursed it. I like the engine, picks up well etc... but then my older 320d had a better engine (no cambelt/more BHP/returns better MPG). I think I have something against MK4 Golfs, and I love my Beemers, ignore me.

I used to naturally not like BMWs being an Audi enthusiast, drove one. Feck me, I'd been missing out. My 320d handled so well, it couldn't live alongside the RS6, as it was more fun on a country road blast - I'm serious.

The handling is pretty impressive for the size of it, it's got air suspension on the rear i wonder if it's BMW's version of DRC :jump:

I feckin hope not! I know the M Sports use Bilstein shocks, how does the handling in your E61 compare the the C5? I find the C5 goes around corners fairly well, it is just the feedback you get from the steering isn't as crisp and direct as in the Bimmer.

If i'm honest the Bimmer feels planted and smooth on the twisty bits and turns in better but it's not doing it at the same speeds the 6 can reach. If you add some rain the 6 will be my preferred choice. Tbh the bimmer is very good but i'll be keeping the 6 for a few years yet :kissmyrings: . If i could have the BMW i-drive and sat system in the 6 i'd be a very happy chappy, i found a dvd online that gives me speed cam alerts :bigblink:

Sorry Gareth we stolen your thread :bigwave:

I hate BMW's only had one and must have been a Friday car as was absolutely dog sh*te!
I currently used RS for work but should not, I get a company car allowance so only get 26p a mile so well out of pocket.
I have a little Saab 93 turbo convert that I am "supposed" to be using for work but have probably done less than 50 miles in the last 4 months.
Looking at moving further away from the office so may have to get a 3rd car... could take company car option but like Amar I am thinking of getting a little diesel on 0% with free servicing (maybe free insurance too?)- no mot for 3 years and rather than pay £350 a month to an HP company and have nothing after 4 years would rather own a car outright and have the asset.

can't sell the Saab as had it forever, costs nothing to insure and the mrs may need to start driving soon!

i've never owned a bimmer, borrowed a mates 325 years back, think it was an h plate, and it was only a couple years old at the time, but i hated it! i had an audi 90 20v quattro back then, and it was much much better, and he said that as well!

i had the same dilemma you all are having, i went and bought an audi a4 2.0 se for work, its great for an old car, its a 2002 model, but it still does average of 38mpg, has electric memory seats and a fridge in the glove box, what more could you ask for!
I used to own a 6, now I'm just a lurker!
