Missing Sensor cover

Post by SimonY » Tue Dec 13, 2011 3:13 pm

Folks,

Only just noticed this week that the small brown cover to the rear of the engine compartment has gone missing! I've been reliably informed that this is some sort of sensor and without the cover it's liable to get damaged or certainly deteriorate over time and that the cover cannot be ordered separately and in the event of a failure, it's an engine out job!

With no idea what it's responsible for and without resorting to a Blue Peter moment and making one out of sticky back plastic is anyone out there breaking an RS6 or similar and would be happy to sell me the cover?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Simon

That's odd.

Anyway shouldn't be hard to find a cover, after all those EGT sensors are a very common failure so there should be plenty of broken ones lying around that you can use the cover from.

There is no cover I thought

It must have broken off. Cover it quick to protect the electronics. Last thing you want to do is change en EGT when it's not even the hot end that's faulty!

What I heard is that it rarely is. The electronics were always the problem. The "new version" has the electronics potted.

Guys,

Thanks very much for the feedback.

Was hoping someone out there would have a spare?

Regards

I am planning on replacing mine over the next couple of weeks. As a fellow RS6 owner and a fellow Simon I'm sure I can spare you an old cover. I'll let you know when the work is done.

Slimmy.

I never heard that before; I assumed that since the hot end was in the firing line then it was the most likely to fail. Got any more info on this?

Also, does that mean that if the EGT fails, it's worth cutting and splicing a new pcb on it before going to the trouble of dropping the engine?

Slimmy and Mr Footlong,

I would be eternally grateful and I'm sure funds for a couple of beers would be absolutely in order as it would be one less thing to worry about having just done the dreaded annual service, gearbox service and cambelt and alternator replacements.

Please keep me posted

I don't recall where I read it last year when I was researching my EGT code, might have been the 2.7T version but they both suffer the same problem. Difference new vs old is potted electronics that much I know for sure.
There was 1 guy in a forum somewhere who repaired his EGT sensor by replacing the PCB (he made his own though IIRC he was rather handy) he did remove it from the car for repair though.
