RS6 - any spec changes/tyre choice?

Post by GeoffC » Tue Mar 30, 2004 11:18 pm

Well on Saturday I pick up my new car - an ex Audi 2003/03 RS6 Avant with 2,000 miles on it.

I drove it briefly when it came into the dealership, but also drove their demo car that is slightly newer - and theirs seemed slightly more responsive - sharper. Anyone know whether Audi have made any changes to the engine management or anything during RS6 production - or is it just a running in thing?

Also went with the Audi service contract given the horror stories of discs/pads only lasting 10k, and tyres 15k. Seems a very reasonably priced option as I've bought the car over 4 years and hence took out 4 years maintenance which given that the car is already 6 months old, means I get an additional year and a half warranty sort of for free.

Any suggestions as to what tyres suit the car best? Mines on Contis - any better suggestions.

For those interested, previous car was a 2003 S3 AMD'd. and before that an RS2, also AMD'd quite seriously!!!

PS I actually had on order a A6 TDI 130 Avant being sensible for once, but getting the RS for £49950 with only 2k on it was too tempting to resist!!

No, Dane in Chester - I work over that way. I live in Stockport so you'll probably spot the car around though!

I've opted for Michelin Pilot Sport 2's all round this time. They are fab tyres, you can turn the ESP off in the dry and floor it out of a junction with no loss of traction. (Turning right from a T junction for example) - don;t take my word for it though!

Also I found that you could push the Contis into a corner and it would push the car wide - "scrub" the front tyres, with the PS2's this has been iradicated

Thanks for the info. although depending on the price for a 6+. I might not keep it all that long!! Think it will hold value a lot better than a regular 6?

Geoff,
there are at least 4 revisions of RS6 ECU apparently.
As far as I know there shouldn't be any difference in power however, apart from of course the RS6+.

With regard to the tyres, if you have the Audi service contract, that includes tyres, you're a bit stuffed I'm afraid, they tell you what to put on and where to have them fitted from what I can gather  I didn't realise this myself until too late (I've taken out the contract too) and I am always playing around with tyres on my cars!

Thanks Alan. We found that with having sat for some time, my car was already ready for a service, so Dane did that & power feels spot on now!! Worth the £50k for the 0-40 soundtrack!

Whats the feel for tyre life then - whatever, the service contract seems to make a lot of sense.

Have decided that can't justify the extra cost to go for a 6+ - unless they find another ex demo car that is :)

I'd like to see if Audi would offer a 6+ upgrades pack for the "standard" RS6. I'm sure many people would be happy to look into between £3 and 5ks worth of mods especially if it keeps your warranty
