Gearbox question

Post by DRC » Fri Oct 07, 2011 12:08 pm

Hello RS6 experts,

Has anybody had the following C5 RS6 gearbox issue? No doubt the local audi garage will just want to replace the whole gearbox, but I'm curious as to what could be wrong before I approach them...

When putting the car into gear for the first time after engine startup, one of two things happens occasionally:

1) The gearbox goes into fail mode, where I'm restricted to one gear and the indicator on the dash lights up all the gear symbols.
2) The car won't change out of first gear when moving forward, although there is no error indication on the dash.

In both cases, turning the engine off and on again restores things to normal.

Any ideas?

Sounds more like a problem with the F125.

Vagcom will help you diagnose.

Great info! Thanks!

That it could be something outside the gearbox is promising indeed. I'm sure it will be awkward to get at though. :)

Right, just need to get hold of Vagcom.

If it's not that, it could be a problem with your gear selector lever. Again, all this can easily be tested with the Vagcom.

Thanks again.

To be honest, the last time I used Vagcom a few years ago, I couldn't make much sense of it. With a new gearbox at stake, this time I'll be reading the instructions. :)

DRC has to be the most tragic choice for a username on the C5 RS forum... I'd consider changing your username to "Coilover", don't forget to renew your topmounts while you're at it.
No matter where you go, there you are.

Well, I couldn't think of a better username at the time, so went for irony.

I had my DRC swapped out with PSS9s back in 2007.

The f125 is a little harder on the rs6 as the down pipe is in the way , It also has a new ' D ' Shape connector on it ..

Well, got home, got a Vagcom, connected it up and voila:

1 Fault Found:
17090 - Transmission Range Sensor (F125): Implausible Signal
P0706 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

Seems I need to replace the F125 with something that sends a more plausible signal.

...anyway, better than replacing the gearbox. :)
