Towing

Post by amgtr » Tue Jun 07, 2011 9:23 am

What is the deal about towing with these cars.
I read that Audi invalidates the warranty if a tow bar is fitted, something to do with the gearbox oil, was that when they were new or does it include the warranties now as well
I’m sure if it’s something like a small trailer for bikes etc then I would have thought that wouldn’t be a problem, I saw one of these in Austria towing a horse trailer once and the way it was pulling away from the lights it was like it wasn’t there
Does anyone actually do a towbar and if so is it just for the Avant.
This could end up being yet another reason why I’m not going to be able to have one, ‘again’

AFAIK this is all about the somewhat fragile gearbox on the beast. Basically I guess Audi don't want us slinging a 2T trailer on the back and trying drag starts. You are unlikely to get a car with an Audi warranty anyway now, and with the inde warranties, if you go for one, then I'd just declare it as a "mod" and see what they say.

The standard towbar for the C5 A6 range fits, IIRC. I can't see any real reason why you shouldn't tow a light trailer etc as long as you drive sensibly and accept that it is putting extra load on the box.

Do a search on here and there have been several threads on the subject before. It has been done, and I can't recall any horror stories!

What dave said. I've never heard of anyone having problems either.

Just a thought. I suspect the RS6 wasn't homologated for towing loads. I'm not sure where this puts you in terms of insurance. There might be some information on your V5 about towing weights, etc.

I think the car lacks type approval so could have insurance issues as above.

Yes, I had a quick look at the type approval. Sections 17 (maximum mass of trailer) and 19.1 (max vertical load at coupling point) are each 0 Kg.

Better check with your insurance company before towing anything.

That sucks, I have seen horrid eco boxes with towbars! The RS6 would be a great towing machine

Well that's exactly what I'd have thought, It's a big car, loads of torque and 4wd should be ideal in that way for what I need.
If I get one of these it will be replacing my Mustang to become a new much needed second daily driver and will need a towbar so as long as I can actually get one (for a saloon hopefully) I'll proceed in my search.
Enquired about the Red one last week at Tempest but no one's come back to me with the info I wanted so I'm a bit pi$$ed off about that, so still looking for others.
Thanks for the helpfull replies, always appreciated
