rs6 tow bar ?

Post by mattysupra » Sat Mar 15, 2008 12:03 am

I know i know, tow bar  is there a tow bar on the market to fit the rs6 that is quick realise? So i can drag a trailer tent to the shows and then remove the tow bar ? Even more fun tho when i do a drag race towing a caravan up the strip! The kit needs to be invisible in a matter of minutes tho. Other wise i will just keep sleeping in my massive boot

Well, installing a tow bar will invalidate the Audi Warranty if you have one. (I read that somewhere..). As to any that fit, sorry no idea.

I don't think the RS6 has Type Approval for a tow bar

I know that an S6 Towbar kit fits straight on - including removable hitch and hinge-down electrics. Seen it done on a car at Brands last year.

RS6 Owners Manual wrote:Your RS6 is not designed to tow a trailer. Towing a trailer with your RS6 is not recommended and can cause damage to the car. Damage caused by towing a trailer is not covered by your Audi Warranty.
Hope this helps.

guess that is down to the gearbox blowing up then! Shows how much faith audi have in the car under load!

That's from the 2003 manual page 205, the 2002 manual I also have doesn't mention it (well, not that I have read every page!). Go figure. :?

I know in guides I read that it is not recommended and that if you see that it has been done then avoid it. So you might be harming your future resale. From what I gather it is not the load that is the problem but something to do with lowering the car!

have been towing with mine for the past couple of years with no problems.
I used the towbar for the audi a6, made by westfalia, and sourced through the audi main dealer.
It is quite right that the warranty is invalidated, not because of the suspension, that can easily cope with the 80kg nose weight of a trailer, but because of the gearbox not being able to cope with the strain if all the power were used whilst towing. But if you're mad enough to try that then you deserve something to break.
THE A6 2.5TDI uses the same gearbox and is rated to tow up to 2100kg.

Might be an option for carrying bikes though , can get 4 bikes on a lot easier than on the roof option
Depends if you can get quick removable options , any one with experience in this ?
Would get approval from warranty company first , in writing of course

Hi,

I just use a standard rear mount one strapped on to the car to carry three bikes never had a problem with it at all.

On the roof use a Thule kit to strap the 4th on.

IIRC it's the gearbox oil cooler which is not rated to do the required job for the extra strain of towing.

i'm just after the best option for carrying multiple bikes on an avant , be it roof mounted audi , or audi bars and thule hol;ders combination , or rear carrier on towbar ( towbar with large sign saying only to be used for carrying bikes etc etc...) ?
Audi option looks good , but isnt cheap , surprise surprise , and bars are specific to audi so are limited in the future...
