Manual Conversions

Post by Shoppinit » Tue Mar 29, 2011 10:10 am

A few of these have been done now.

Does that mean that MRC / Unit20 / other have got the technique down pat?

Has anyone had a ballbark price for getting one done?

About £10k, plus a donor 2.7 A6 for the gearbox, pedals etc...

You need to plan to keep the car for a loooooong time to justify it!

Or let some other poor punter waste their money and then buy it off them later ;)

I know this is about manual conversions, but, can't the c6 box go in? I like having an auto now and the c6 box seems meatty enough

I assume any 01E. An A6 2.7T 'box + hardened final gear is an option OR a Euro/US manual C5 S6 if you can find them.

There's also a fitting kit that might be very helpful.

"This kit adapts the 01E transmission to the RS6 block and crankshaft.

For $2,100 USD, the kit includes:

Transmission adapter plate
Racing starter with custom nose (uses stock wiring harness)
Aluminum flywheel
Hardware kit
Detailed installation instructions"

Image

"This kit was professionally developed by an experienced engineering firm via 3D laser scanning and CMM technologies to ensure accuracy, safety and rigidity. The adapter and starter nose are CNC machined from 6061 aluminum.

The kit must be used in conjunction with the following OEM or aftermarket pieces (not included) for a complete mechanical conversion from an automatic to manual:

From the C5 A6 2.7T or C5 S6 manual transmission models, the drive shaft, front axles, transmission brackets, clutch pedal and all associated mechanical components, slave cylinder and all associated hydraulic components, reverse switch and VR sensor can be used

The transmission mounts and three (3) M12 transmission to engine mounting bolts are retained from the C5 RS6

The flywheel is designed with the appropriate dimensions to mate with the 01E and use the C5 2.7T or C5 S6 clutch and pressure plate and throwout bearing. So you would need to source a clutch and pressure plate to your liking based off of these OEM modes for reference for reference.

There are many different variations of the 01E than can be selected for use. The final drive of the front differential will dictate which rear differential is required.

Please note, and it's been stated before: This kit only facilitates the mechanical mating of the RS6 motor to the 01E. On my end, the ECU modifications are not available, but hopefully will be in due time.

Quantities of the CNC components are currently underway and my lead times for flywheels and starters are approximately 2 - 3 weeks. "

Screw doing the conversion. Buy those parts and hang them on the wall.

Over the last year two I've been speaking with a few of the people around the world who have done a manual conversion on a C5 RS6 & what I've gleaned from speaking with them is as follows(the USA guys particularly didn't want to part with much info on their builds, one of the guys on here has been very helpful confirming what I've heard from other sources):

You can use virtual any quattro manual box from the B5 V6 series, any RS4 box, & any C5 V6 series box. But let's face it why would you bother using a 5 speed box when there are so many 6 speed boxes available!
The box I'll use is a 2.5 Tdi 6 speed as it has a higher final gear ratio meaning you can cruise at motorway speed with less RPM under your belt giving you better economy & if IIRC they have harder gearsets than the petrol version from the factory due to the extra/earlier onset of Torque.

A few of the conversions don't run an adapter plate as most of the mounting holes line up apart from three lower bolts on the starter motor side(driver side IIRC), you can drill the engine block & tap it to accept a bolt on at least one of the holes or you could run the risk and not use bolts in those holes, not a good idea IMO.

As to the price there is a lot of little parts needed that add to the price rather quickly.
I'd buy a 2.5Tdi 6 speed C5 A6 & strip it of most of the parts needed for the conversion like pedal box, clutch hydraulics, box, etc..

Please don't take what I say as gospel as I'm only repeating what I've been told from others who have done it.

I heard a saying once which may apply, "What price doth thou hold on originality?" It is a very small club & may be worth the Cash to some.
I still have to convince my CFO that it's a necessary upgrade once I get my RS6!
