Very true. But bad mafs can cause the ECU to log lambda sensor errors. And he said he had that error as well as the misfiring.

I did read on one post in the past that water leaking into passenger side footwell from blocked roof drain pipes might effect the ECU electronics causing all sorts of weird responses, misfires etc.

Have you had any work done on it that involved taking the airbox off? Mine drove like crap and had really poor throttle response, was also throwing up lambda codes after I picked it up from the garage.
Checked the maf readings and both were sub 2 so whipped the airbox off swapped the maf's for good measure and fitted box properly. Now running smoothly and maf readings spot on.
Easy job so may be worth a try?

I checked my compressions a couple of months ago while changing the spark plugs they were all 160 psi, just so you know what to expect.

Can't engine Mounts cause the engine to misfire ?

Sure I read that on here somewhere.

They should throw codes though.

Only if they cause the engine rip the flexible exhaust coupling;

They can cause codes, though, but no power loss or adverse effects. I remember someone doing the experiment. There was a rumour that faulty engine mounts caused the ECU to back the turbos off, but this was proven to be false with vagcom logs.

Common causes of misfiring could be:

Plugs (wrong part, worn or not correctly torqued)
Bad fuel (you're not running on 95 are you?)
MAF
Lambda
Air leak

Am I missing any?
