RNS-D dead, advice please

Post by Will340 » Fri Nov 19, 2010 1:41 pm

Dead RNS-d

The problems started with it always asking for code to be entered a couple of times a week, progressed to every day, then went asking for the code in German. When code was entered everything was German including preset radio channels. On the day of complete failure it would cut out and ficker back on an asked for the code again. In the end it wouldn't come on at all as if all power to the unit was lost. Checked fuse found to be OK tried a different 2nd hand head unit nothing.....what should I do next??

Sounds like it's not going to be an easy fix. There may be specialists out there, but I am sure you can pick up another RNS-D for not much money these days. When I bought one a couple of years ago, they were going for £200.

It sounds like it might be some faulty flash memory, or a voltage regulator. Maybe an electronics engineer could fix it for you, but might work out cheaper to get a 2nd hand one.

Or take the opportunity to upgrade...

Already got a second hand head unit as I thought that might be the cheapest solution but it seems the fault is elsewhere :?: deep within the miriad of wires and black boxes that RS6's are made of!!

Then you are in trouble ;)

Try doubling up the earth to a metal point on the chassis. Maybe you've got a bad earth. Check the state of the connectors in the harness plug.

What if I got the 2 RNS-D units and taped them together would it be as good as an RNS-E??? It might be struggle getting them back in so I'd have to cut a bigger hole in the dash!!

Agreed but if he has a wiring fault chances are the Rns-e won't work either. I think there's some wiring diagrams on Audiforums.us or get craigb to sort it for you.

I had an RNS-E fitted and it worked , no problem

All sorted now, took me ages to get round to booking it in to an auto electrical place near me, first place had it for a couple of hours and said it was far to complex to sort out. Second place (Snowdons in Hereford) said they had a young technician who was up to date on all the complicated VAG stuff, so they sorted it in the end. I confused them a bit by supplying various solutions to the most likely problems found via the web which all turned out to be incorrect in this case. The fault turned out to be corroded conectors in the wiring loom which runs along the floor powering the whole system incuding amps cd changer etc. Why were they corroded? well this was caused by an earlier water leak which again was a nightmare to solve....All the usual suspects were tried, bungs in the scuttle panel removed, pollen filter housing removed and sealed with silicon then replaced all together with a new unit, rear washer pipe disconection?? nope it was none of the above....It was eventually solved by the main man Grizz who spent ages on it and found it to be a blocked vent on the aircon system which ment all condensation which usually gets dumped on the floor was back filling into the cabin!

Hahaha, that'd be a "RNS-Double D". You can't get one of those, you'd be forever tweaking the nipples and you'd never make it out of the driveway!
No matter where you go, there you are.
