Engine rattle from cold

Post by bilko1 » Fri Nov 19, 2010 2:55 pm

I had the car inspected a few days ago for Warranty direct (they sent an engineer) he has sent the report to them and they rang me to inform me that they won't cover the engine. His report says that the engine rattled for a short period when cold but was fine when warm (he suspected low oil pressure). From reading old posts this is normal for this engine this tme of year surely a qualified engineer would know this, also i hadn't used the car for a few days. With hindsight i should of started it before he arrived but i'm an honest person. They said the only way they will cover the engine is if i have it repaired first or get a garage to confirm that it in good order. What would you guys do? I thought Warranty direct were clued up about the RS6 but i'm having doubts now, maybe i should cancel the policy and build up a slush fund.

I'm waiting for a copy of the report then i'll give more details. The car runs and drives fine afaik and i've been in the trade for 25 years.

Run it up to MRC for a full healthcheck and send their paperwork to WD.

Simples - and you get peace of mind as well.

Of course, you could get a few goodies while you're there

it is a slack cam tensioner and blocked oil pickup pipe

Nice  sounds like hydraulic tappets to me, perhaps an oil change will help although it was serviced by Audi a few months ago. Oil light goes straight out and has never come on like the 1.8t engine.

It's very common on these engines especially as they age. Happens whenever it's cold on mine, and I've recently had full MRC service incl cambelt and tensioner etc, and no problems with oil pickup either!

Nothing to worry about - have a search back on these forums and you'll find a few threads all reaching the same conclusions.

nothing to worry about, just get the sump cleaned and change oil pickup

Same here. All fine and given a clean bill of health from Audi last week.

I found the posts from this time last year, just seems as the outside temps drop the noises start:) Just got to convince WD that it's normal. I need to go to MRC as i'm doing a few mods and want them to remap it, Unit 20 is too far away at least two tankfulls:)
