RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Boots of Choice!
I'm on 255/30/20's eagle f1's. Doug filed down my knobbly bit just to make sure and I run 3mm shims on the fronts. Now zero contact...be wary though, mine only made contact when tyres were warm! When fitted and checked they looked fine, then after an hour on the motorway, I'd get a v slight rub...hence the spacers. No trouble since!

I have now also been a victim of the infamous knobbly bit!!DAylward wrote:That is the exact reason i need to replace 2 of mine.I have about 5mm across the whole of the tyre but the inside wall is shredded down to the cordbam_bam wrote:My 2%.
R01s should always be fitted if using Conti's, don't let anyone tell you any different, otherwise you'll shred the inside wall on the infamous "knobbly bit" (technical term). There are many post on here but you've probably already found them.![]()
I am hoping the R01s clear the knobbly bit or i am taking an angle grider to it
Last night I got a puncture driving home. As the 275 Vreds are so hard and solid, they barely broke into a sweat even though they blew out at approx. 100 kleptons. In fact I was able to drive home they were that stable and behaved just like run-flats. In fact, I swore they were at one point..
Since I decided to go back to 255 today, I couldn't really go to the tyre fitters to get that one 255 done, mix it with the 3 other 275s and drive back there as that might cause issues, so I called green flag who can recover the car anywhere within 10 miles on a flatbed. This service is included with my Natwest account, so was well happy.
Anyway, the state of the 2 front tyres was almost mad max beyond thunderdome... the wires were hanging out, with a knobbly bit gash going all the way round.. not impressed at all really.
Anyway, we fitted the new tyres (255/35/19 Bridgestone Potenza A0) and low and behold they were literally touching the knobbly bit. At this point, I'd had enough and basically asked the bloke if they had an angle grinder - to which he said 'no, but I know a man who does..' so he went and got it and proceeded to grind the <beep> flat. NO MORE FECKING KNOBBLY BIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In my opinion, the car should never have left the factory with the damn thing. So this will be the first decent nights sleep since having the car knowing that that damn "bad; interfering; fouling; and grim reaper goading terribly cast hunk of metal" (knobbly bit is far too polite) is gone FOREVER
In my opinion, having slightly less metal there which seems to serve no purpose whatsoever is far less dangerous than having effectively a razor blade less than 1mm from your tyre ready to kill you at any bloody moment.
Suffice to say, I'm nearly a grand lighter!! But in fairness all 4 tyres were at the end of their life anyway, so not too bothered AND I now have my comfy ride back!
I have some great pics to document the whole episode and you will see exactly what I mean. Just gonna upload them to photobucket and will report back shortly.
RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Boots of Choice!
look forward to the report

Who was it that's running Bridgy's? I just wish we could get Bridgy Potenza RE-11s over here. I've got a mate in Oz that has been through just about every tyre on the planet (he runs a 10sec Supra and a Scooby). He swears by the RE11s. Probably best suited for summer though, they look double hard too.

No matter where you go, there you are.
Okey dokey, check these bad boys out. Taken on my trusty K800i phone:
Tyre that let go:

'Knobbly Bit' (a few angles):

Yep, there is a knobbly bit behind too:

But loads of strength in the metal:

New tyres fitted and literally touching. Ooh err missus, touching nipples:

Now begone you frightful oik!:

And now:

And another (that's a leaf stuck to it by the way..):

Happy viewing!

Now I know what everybody has been talking about!
I'll check to see if I have a knobbly bit this weekend before spending a grand on fitting new rubber. Is this bit on the front and rear?
