Hi all,
A while back I read about an owner that had their brake disc's skimmed?
Mine are ok, just the usual ridge around the outside.
Is this something people are doing and if so, where can it be done?
Kind regards
Skimmed brake discs?
RE: Skimmed brake discs?
Check the minimum thickness first to see if it is possible. It is stamped on the bell.
RE: Skimmed brake discs?
Not sure this is advisable. WHat are the chances of getting them back running as true as new? If its a good machine shop they should manage it but if not??
Also what is the point in doing this? The lip created when the pads start to wear the disc doesn't compromise the braking and the only plus is that they might look new but its the thickness that matters not what they look like.
Best to put the cash away towards new discs when the thickness gets to the limit.
Only possible reason is to make the discs 'look' fresh to a potential buyer or trader but ethically that wouldn't sit right with me. Suppose it could be done to discs that are mildly warped but you will loose some meat on them to recover this.
I'd def advise to not waste the money on doing this.

Fair point, now it's put that way.
I'm not after saving any cash as they are not due as far as I can see, just thought it might be a good idea.

Audi can do it for you with the disks still attached to the car, an Aberdeen member on here had it done.
I saw the disks afterwards and looked good, wasn't that expensive either.

Skimmed Discs
My rear ones were done prior to me buying mine, don't know whether via Audi or not, however its been a very gentle few months of driving ( or stopping ) and its going into Unit 20 for new ones next week!!!!

RE: Skimmed Discs
They skim brake discs out here quite a lot and it seems to work ok if you have enough thickness left. I never had it done in uk but apparently here (Dubai) it is done more because wafting/blown sand sticks and melts to hot discs so causes them to be very rough and give abrupt brake feel, excessive pad wear, too much heat, uneven wear or slight warping.
