Custom dog cage for the 6.

Post by ecain63 » Fri Aug 06, 2010 9:24 pm

Ive been carrying the dog (27kg Field Spaniel) in my car for the past 3 years with no dramas, helped by him being very car friendly and falling asleep as soon as the engine starts. He sleeps on a bed which is on top of a rubber mat and i keep the built in guard up so the back of the car remains clean and dog dirt free. However, ive just taken on another dog (10kg Working Cocker Spaniel). She's a bit older, still very car friendly, but likes to jump between the rear windows and the edge of the guard and onto the back seats.

Obvioulsy i cant let this happen so im looking for a custom cage that will house the pair within one large compartment. The standard square rectangle cages are no good in the 6 with the shaped interior and lip under the top of the boot lid. I have one square cage already which is big enough for the first dog, but need a bigger one for the pair. If i get the next size up it doesnt fit so in order to make use of all that space which i still have im gonna need to get a custom job made.

Does anyone know if Audi did a cage for the RS6 / A6? Is the C5 RS6 boot the same size and shape as the C5 A6? Has anyone got one for sale that they no longer need? Has anyone got any experience with custom cages?

Eddie

It'll rot her mind that crap. I plain refuse to watch any of that guff! Let he sulk, but let her know that you are saving her from having brain turn to sludge.

Totally agree that sh*t will make you stooopid! I did'nt spend thousand's of pounds on top of the range audio visual equipment to watch a bunch of halfwits make a fool of themselves on it.

Back to 'dog guard' ... I have had an Audi approved dog guard installed in my C5 .. photo to follow if anyone needs one which stops my
28 kg wire haired pointer from getting into the main cabin from the boot space.

Yeah, the standard dog guard is fine if the dog is over 15kgs as it wont fit through the gaps.
My new dog is like a rat up a drain pipe. Ive ordered a custom one now, just got to wait 4 weeks for it to arrive. Not cheap though!!!!

Well, after 4 weeks of waiting my custom dog cage has arrived. I'll put some pics up at the weekend but for now you'll have to make do with my description. £265 delivered from a company called 'hamsterbaskets' gets you a pucker, rattle free, custom dog cage designed for your car and to your own spec (some features cost more). The design and build is excellent, with all the bits plasticoated and held together with strong springs to guarantee it never rattles. It uses 100% of the available space in the boot, which regular square cages don't do and is easily securable on the eyes on the boot floor. Building it took 5 mins as it all just clips together with springs and the fit is excellent with only 10mm gap between the seat back, tail gate / rear window and side bulkheads. To say I'm pleased with it is an understatment and I look forward to my next road trip with the dogs at the end of the month. It even comes with a couple of accessories: a steel hook to hold the tailgate open about 6" should you need to improve ventilation when parked up, and another gizmo to hold the cage door open when the boot is open. Anyway, like I said, I'll get some pics up at the weekend.

Eddie.
