As my alternator recently died, I did a bit of research and it seems that at RS6.com the same thing happened to a couple of cars with a similar mileage as mine (80-90k).
Haven't really heard about this one yet, how many here had their alternators toasted, and when? Is it a known thing at the age?

Yep, similar mileage here too. Do a search of what to look out for when changing, ie. cooler, hoses etc. cam be an expensive fix.

Yeah, did put the Wagners in when it all was off (always a sad sight) and the silicon tubes, cambelt has another 18 moths to go.

Mine went at about 65k. Where did you get the silicon hoses from, Yogi?

Cool. I'll give Carsten a shout. Mine popped off the other day. It's annoying when you've only got a Leatherman's on you and you realise that the jack that you bought to replace the one that buckled the first time you tried to use has been left at home :S

mine was replaced at 60k. charging wasn't the problem, it was a noisy pulley bearing....

Yep, Mine went at 85K... seems a common age...
It would be good to get a 'sticky' with things to expect (fail) and expected times/milage....such as....
DRC (anytime from 20K onwards)
Thermostat 45K (change at cambelt)
Waterpump 45K (change at cambelt)
Alternator (60-80K)

Mine went on the way back from the Le Mans Classic this year... I noticed earlier in the day that we had stopped in 36 degree heat with the a/c on full, sat nav and phones charging and the dash reading was only 12v at idle. Set off and the reading crept back up to ~13.5v when travelling, but then about 30 mins later the dash lit up like a Christmas tree and I spotted the battery reading off the scale >16v for about 1 second and then settled on only 12v. I knew what had happened from the topics on this forum and had to decide what to do - we were 75 miles/1.5 hours (sat nav reading) from Caen ferry terminal with a car load of stuff tents/camping gear etc, and 3 other cars in convoy following me back...
We decided to switch off all electrics, a/c, even the dash read outs and go for the ferry. In >35 degrees, it quickly got hot in the car and I realised the one thing taking its toll on the battery were the engine cooling fans - as soon as we dropped below 45mph they were starting to spin up and diminishing the voltage reading. Amazingly, crusing along at ~60mph and achieving what must be the best mpg I've ever got out of the RS6, we made it all the way to the ferry!
The fact that I'd replaced the battery in March with a decent replacement paid dividends! I borrowed some jump leads at the ferry from a couple of Austin Healey owners (much to their amusement and a few jibes!) to give the battery a 45 min charge off one of my mate's cars which got me back to the UK. Then it was just a case of getting a flatbed home which I sorted on the ferry as we docked - the AA had no problems coming straight out with a low loader and relayed me home. I was just glad to make it back and not have to worry about the hassle of recovering the car from France!
