Secondary air pumps

Post by marmite » Tue Mar 16, 2010 10:08 am

My secondary air pump has gone very noisey again
this is the third one on the car now

Anyone else had to replace theres

First one was replaced as it was making a thumping noise which got fairly loud
Bought brand new one from ebay(audi surplus stock) but that went noisey after a couple of months
Got another..yes Ebay but used OK but now just started to get noisey then this morning sounds more like a Dyson then a RS

I can also hear a thumping noise aswell...very strange all was ok for 60k then in the last 6 had 2 secondary air pumps replaced

Mine went noisy recently. Took it to MRC who simply wired it out of the system and reset the ECU so it doesn't object - very seeemple as that Meercat says!

The system is only there to meet some compliance regs in Europe and is not needed for running in UK

I have removed the entire system from my car and had my tuner "kill" the codes so it doesnt throw a DTC

Mine got full of water and sounded like a kettle boiling, MRC took it out and cleared all codes.
They are only used when first started when engine is cold.

Mine have become noisy when the car is started in very low temeratures, and no noise at all in normal temps.

The sound is like a turbine whine - the Dyson analogy above is close!

At the same time the usual cold start habit of the car being very lumpy and a real "Bubba Bubba Bubba Bubba" exhaust sound accompanied with the OTT torque in parking maneuvers has gone...

I understand they are there to ensure the cats warm up more quickly.

Is there not a reason for this part being on the car?

I'm getting a service in the next couple of weeks so will get them checked...

The secondary air system is designed to enable the catalytic converter to heat up and reach its operating temperature more quickly after a cold start.

Because of the over-enrichment of the mixture in the cold start phase, the proportion of unburned hydrocarbons in the exhaust gas is higher. The secondary air system improves the afterburning (oxidation) process in the catalytic converter, and thus reduces toxic emissions. The heat generated by oxidisation accelerates the light off of the catalytic converter and significantly improves exhaust gas quality during warm-up.
So it's just to satisfy the greenies.

Just bringing this subject back to the fore - I'm going to replace mine.

It's so damn noisy.

Does anyone on here have a brand new one they want to sell?

It's just incase I can get one that way instead of buying new.

Cheers

I got the last one off ebay same as An A8 one

Audi looked into the fault and found secondary air flow incorrect on one Bank,. the valve on the back on the head sticking, this is what is causing the Air pump to fail
So it might be worth having that looked at first mine did 60K no probs, but now had 3 fail.

she is going to Audi tuesday to have loads done so I will let you know if the thumping noise has gone
