escaping boost pressure?

Post by zsivany » Mon Oct 26, 2009 8:39 pm

guys, i have a strange question. my car has a boost leak somewhere near the rhs turbo behind the engine. took my car the a dealership. the engine is out. i built a boost leak tester and when i pump pressure into the system, i can hear the air escaping but we cant see where. it sound like its inside the turbo (???) also: when we pull out the dipstick, i can hair the air bubbling in the sump in the oil. is that normal? i mean the intercoolers are not connected so the only way the air could get inside the engine is throught the oil feeds???
any ideas?

Sorry a little off topic but how did you build your boost tester, do you have any pics.

I think I have the same problem coming from the same place

How much pressure are you putting in? Are you doing the tests with the engine running or not? If not then there is no oil pressure to stop the air finding its way into the sump. Makes sense to me. The turbos use plain bearings, so when cold and with no oil pressure to "seal" the shaft then I'm pretty sure it won't be airtight.

If you've got a boost leak, then it'll almost certainly be the hoses or the intercoolers. The only way I can imagine a turbo leaking air is if it's cracked. Although I'm not an expert on turbos.

Have you check the IC?

hi guys. i built the tester from normal plastic pipes what the plumbers use (not sure what size u get there but i thin its either 86 or 96 mm) with a stop end and a tire valve. very simple.
the engine is out of the car so there is no oil pressure so that might explain why the air gets inside the engine. turbos are coming off tomorrow and i am gonna inspect every little piece myself :-)
