Day 1:
Leg 1:
Welwyn Garden City --> Folkestone
With the Road Trip bible (itinerary) in hand, Darth (RS 6) and I left work at 12pm to take the short drive across to the train station to pick up my co-driver and head of security (aka. Pete and BIG Dan)
Bang on time, their train arrived and Pete took the reins to acclimatise to the beast on UK roads in preperation for what was to follow on ‘foreign soil’
So we set off, down the A1 and plugged our first destination, Folkestone, into Mindy.
Now Mindy is a nickname given to the RNSE Sat Nav women by my missus after a series of cock ups in trying to direct us. These only really became apparent after we had the pleasure of Martha in my S4 Cabriolet. Now Martha is what Mindy is but with TMC enabled – then she’s so much cleverer!
Anyway, Mindy’s stats showed we’d arrive at Folkestone at 14.00, and check-in closed at 14.20. Excellent we thought, 20 mins ahead of schedule!
That was until we hit the M25!
The approach to the QEII Bridge was chocked up and lost us 30 minutes, so from a position of strength of +20mins, we were now in deficit by 10 mins! There was only one thing that could save us….a V8 Bi-Turbo!!!!

So, once on the M20, Pete’s right foot got acquainted with the accelerator pedal and we cruised close to 3 figures all the way, with a/c on as it was a warm sunny day, a trend that was to be continued throughout the trip.
It was close, but 14.19 we checked in! Phew! Still on track…..quick check on average MPG, 18.4! Damn it; off track our target average of 22….note to self, no more air con!

Leg 2:
Calias --> Amsterdam
Whilst on the Eurotunnel I made us of the time to plug in all the required destinations for the journey, so they were all saved in memory.
Set the destination for our Hostel in Amsterdam and we were ready to roll.
Off the train we came, into the French sunshine and ready to power on….I was driving now! I kept an anxious eye on Mindy as it still said we were in Folkestone….I was thinking it was work it out in a second, but we kept driving and….nothing….was getting slightly worried
Then; out of nowhere, Martha appeared! Yes TMC enabled in Europe and we now had a new companion! Right 300 odd miles to Amsterdam…
Through France, which was pretty quiet, 2 lanes in annoying though but pretty clear…there was a Ferrari behind me that came off the Eurotunnel. I tried to entice him into a play but burning off when the road was clear, but he wasn’t interested, so I stuck it to 80 in cruise to try and get the MPG up.
Into Belgium in no time at all, but all was not to be well for much longer, as Martha piped up to inform us of traffic ahead and that she was to change our route.
As it turned out, the traffic was around the dreaded “Antwerp Ringâ€
