95 octane fuel in your RS6?

I only put good quality 95 in mine and she goes like stink - I can't tell the difference tbh chaps, 2 octane rating is a bit of a con in my view. Tesco 99 is prob worh it but I can't be bothered trying to find a tesco's to fill up !!

It's not a linear scale. 97 isn't 2.1% more powerful than 95. The octane rating is an indication of how resistant the fuel is to knocking (pinking / pre-detonation) which is when the fuel spontaneously combusts before the spark and which is extremely bad for the engine.
Modern cars are able to detect when pinking occurs and dial back the ignition timing (and possibly mixture, but not sure about that) to make sure that pinking doesn't occur. The higher the octane rating, the more power the car can squeeze of out the fuel.
How the car manages lower octane fuel is programmed into the ECU. If AUdi say not to go full throttle ion 95 it's possibly because the engine can't dial back the ignition enough to prevent the possibility of pinking and the damage that pinking can cause.
Sorry if I'm preaching to the converted, I don't mean to be patronising. Myself, I wondered for a long time how bottles of octane booster could possibly contain enough energy to make any difference.

I don't know, to be honest. I've no idea if octane boosters work or by how much they'll boost your octane.jd_hants wrote:so am i correct in deducing that IF you have to put 95 (or even 97) octane in the car then its probably best to tip a can of booster in with it???

I have been using my RS6 for about 50k miles now, over the last 2 years, I have found the following to be true for me:
Put in optimax and get about 340 -360 miles to the tankful. Put in normal unleaded and get 310-335 miles to the tankful. It does seem to improve the mileage achievable and it does make the car more eager when giving it the beans. However, there have been many occasions where I have just put tank after tank of normal unleaded in and still driven it (ahem) quickly and had no issues at all. It does focus the mid when the local shell garage is charging 114p a litre of optimax making it a £95 fill up, but I don't think it is anything too major to get hung up on. I would be interested to see if the octane boosters you can add would release any extra performance but I would doubt it somehow.
