Hi JD,
Firstly a caveat - my knowledge isn't huge, but happy to give my perspective - please just don't take it as the law......
I don't think any RNS-D has TMC. I've recently upgraded from D to E (as you'll see from the conversation above). Previously I had a 2008 Blaupunkt disc in my D, which worked fine, but no TMC there - my car also a late 53. RNS-E - much better. Nicer interface, smoother maps (DVD rather than CD quality) - and the Bluetooth interface is fab. I bought a 2009 Disc for it, which installed the TMC facility as part of the inbuilt software update. Well worth the investment IMHO.
I think that answers your three points - do PM me if you want further info.

I'm not sure exactly what TMC offers, but my sat-nav lady has announced "Warning, traffic disruption ahead" if there's a jam.
I think my disc is 2008 with RNS-D.

Traffic Message Channel (TMC) is a technology for delivering traffic and travel information to drivers. It is typically digitally coded using the FM-RDS system on conventional FM radio broadcasts. It can also be transmitted on DAB or satellite radio. It allows silent delivery of high quality accurate, timely and relevant information, in the language chosen by the user and without interrupting normal services. Services, both public and commercial, are now operational in many European countries. When data is integrated directly into a navigation system, this gives the driver the option to take alternative routes to avoid traffic incidents.

OK thanks guys for your comments.
My A4 has RNS-E and TMC and its very useful. Just wondered if the RS6's with RNS-D all have the TMC capability, (i.e. TMC fitted) but just need a newer Map disc.
Possibly I just need to do as Rupert has done and get myself a 2008 version. Does the disc say 2008 TravelPilot DX?

Found the box: it's a TeleAtlas Blaupunkt DX Travel Pilot Navigation CD for United Kingdom - Ireland, 2007/2008.
It says Dynamic route guidance with iTMC for GB.
I bought it from an Audi garage on eBay. I have RNS-D.
