Newbie queries!!

Post by onlinesys » Thu Mar 05, 2009 8:20 am

Hi All,

Just acquired a 2002 RS6 Avant and glad to find a lot of useful info over here. Few queries would like to be asked (apologize for my bad English).

1. DRC's dead (as usual  ) so bought H&R coilovers, Hotchkis Sway bars and front control arms for replacement (to be done next week)
(any suggestions on the setup of H&R??)

2. Emission warning light on a month ago, then erased by garage and fine for one month and came back on last week. Disappeared again yesterday and will do a scan when the ordered VAG-Com cable is arrived
(any clue?? MAF, O2 sensors, oil leak??)

3. Steering Wheel shaking after 60mph. Did align tyres and swap the front/rear tyres. Something to do with the front control arms, bushings??

4. Paint coming off beside the internal headlight switch, switches on the power windows, handle etc. (not sure this happened due to the weather over here ). Can I DIY myself by getting some paint and re-paint them?
Any one done it b4?

Thanks again for your help. (only less than 10 C5 RS6 Avant over here!!)

Mine was the same when I bought it. I had the tracking done (by someone good) and now it's perfect. Shocking difference. Might not be your problem but worth thinking about.

Best thing is to replace. Most of the parts you mention are common to all A6 and could be cheaper than you think to buy.

The exception is the door handle that seems to have leprosy. You can't change just the handle, it's the whole door trim and it costs a BOMB. I've decided to live with mine. I just changed the elec window switch surrounds. £5.

I'll be changing my tiptro buttons soon because the paint's wearing off them.

Could be a flat spot on one or more of the wheels - check the inner edge of the rims.

Apologize for my ignorance. What is "had the tracking done"?

I agree with you. We could change the elect window switch surrounds but the switches are also with scratches around plus the surrounds of the light switch are also with paint's wearing off and it is non replaceable!!
That's the reason why I would like to see if there is any DIY paint job could be done

Cheers

This is an adjustment to make sure wheels are aligned correctly.

I think that anything you do will have a good chance of looking worse. I considered rubbing off the remaining "soft touch" coating on the door handle to at least have a uniform finish.

Where the black on the switch is worn away, and it's exposing the white underneath, you could try colouring with a permanent marker.

What country are you in?

I did ask the tyres shop to do the wheel/tyres alignment for me so will they do the toe in/out as well?

I reckon it is a good idea to make them a uniform finish !!

That's exacting the situation where you could see the white underneath.
Will try to colour it then.

I am in Hong Kong, the ex-colony!!! :)
Temperature could be as high as 36 degree C and sometime with heavy rain like cats and dogs. No snowing though.

Cheers

Frankly, I prefer the good old days as a colony rather than the beloved son/daughter of the Mainland China

I fitted my H+Rs the rear ones needed to be set as high as possible. I could measure my platform height and let you know. It is far easier to set the height before you fit them.

you could try one of the hi end valeting companies in HKG. Most'll have a coachwork department that may sort out the door leprosy. Maybe the valeting company in Harbour City carpark, Canton Road, Tsim Sha Tsui.

They normally only handle the exterior body and interior cleaniness.
I reckon it might be a common problem for most RS6 owners with paint off the dials/switches

It would be splendid if you could help. No Grizz is available here in the other side of the world

Mine are worn with leprosy but I'll live with it. How much tax you paying to keep the car on the road ?
