Latest visit to unit 20.
Re: Latest visit to unit 20.
did you try the car with the new shocks , but before the arb's ?Cornishmoocher wrote:I went to see Grizz a couple of weeks ago for some bits and peices, namely DRC change out and what everelse I could afford.
I arrived at 7.30 in the morning, had a cup of coffee, and went in to Grizz's MOTer. MOT done and dusted, all arranged by Grizz so no waiting or faffing about, just in and out, first job of the day. Great stuff.
Then back nto Unit20 for th rest of the bits.
My front disks were shot to bits, but had done over 20k miles so only to be expected, and had had a hard 20k at that!
Decided to go for the "big brake upgrade" with new oEM pads.
This done, next was the DRC rip out. A nice shiney set of red H&R's fitted and set up to my requirements (5mm higher than normal H&R settings due living on a farm), Whilst this was being done the old ARB's were removed and a set of Hotchkiss ARB's were installed.
The car was then checked over by Grizz and given the green light. I was on my way home again by 5pm. The amazing thing was that the brakes, DRC and ARBs were not started untill 3pm!! This was down to a delay from athird party and nothing to do with unit20. Absolutely brilliant, to be able to do that amount of work in such a short period of time.
I have now been driving the car in its new guise for aboutr a copule of weeks and i have to say, its awesome. The brakes are face removing, it corners as if on rails, and I can now use ALL of the power.
The car was diven by Paul (B5RS4 MTM tuned) at our local meet, who drove it prior to all this work. Paul has done many many track days and a guy whose opinion I really value and trust. His verdict " Awesome".
So in short, I would highly recommend A) unit20 and Grizz, the guy is a wizzard. B) H&R coilovers, turn a boat into a train. C) Hotchkiss ARB's, eliminate roll TOTALLY. D) Th big brake upgrade is phenominal, the car just stops, everytime, no fade, no judder just stops. And finally E) Goodyear eagle F1 assymetrics. These tyres are by far the best I have ever used on ANY car. Fantastic in the dry or wet.
Thanks To Grizz and Unit 20, I have fallen in love with my car all over again.

ie , do you know for sure that the arb's have made any difference , or whether the new shocks have made 95% all the improvement to the handling , and the arb's are more a window dressing ? ( albeit with a possibly small improvement that you might notice on a track ? )

Nah Phil, the car is solid, but not uncomfortable, you can tell the difference by sitting in the boot and wiggling! The latteral movement is almost totally illiminated (grab hold of the roof rails and try and rock her), while you get a small amount of back an for'd pitch and dive when you sit in the boot- but not much!

RE: Re: Latest visit to unit 20.
it wasnt so much the comfort factor ,, more just whether you tried the car with the h&r's to see the improvement before you added the arb's , to see what the difference was
i am looking at h&r's or pss9's and saw your post on the arb's which made me think about them .am not a track day driver and have heard i wouldnt tell the difference on road driving , no matter how wild the driving !

RE: Re: Latest visit to unit 20.
Have you been in one that has been done?
I think that you will tell the difference ok. As for not doing track days, i have not done any either, but i still would not want to go without my H&Rs now. the pss9- why do you neec 9 settings? to me that is to much and maybe the run of the mill driver would not notice the difference.
BUT to answer your original question, no, just put them on the same time as the H&Rs. But they HAVE to and DO make a difference, they are twice the thickness of the OEMs. Besides, as I mentioned the ARBs will take out the roll but do not affect the pitch, and if you sit in the boot and jump up and down the car will still pitch a bit but not much, so I presume that the H&Rs would allow a bit of roll without the H&Rs but on standard bars.
If you want a go in mine you are more than welcome, I arnt to far away, and am in Croyden quite a lot.....

Phil, when the DRC works the RS corners flat, when it doesn't work or is sub-optimal
, then it rolls. If you change to coilovers, it will have some roll using the original OEM ARB's, hence my view was to eliminate it and have the ARB's work with the coilovers to flatten the cornering, made sense to me........ and it works.
Using adjustable dampers will affect the cornering roll as well, as it makes a difference when I'm using the PSS9's on 4 (comfy) or on 1 (sport). Guess what, 1 is the best setting for handling and quite close to the original flat DRC setup. But considering I use it on 4 about 50% of the time, then I'm glad I bought the Hotchskis ARB's.
You could always have coilovers fitted and if you are concerned with handling, then you could go back and get the ARB's, that way you will definitely notice the difference. Yes it increases the cost to change, but in my view and others, it is a necessary change to do both, as it gets the RS back to where Audi intended it to be. The rear ARB's have two settings, just have them set to the firmest which is 67% stiffer than OEM.
