I haven't had a good natter for a while, for which I apologise, I'm going to finish off my findings on my tyre / tracking issues from 12 months ago on another section, but the times coming up for me to get into replacing my brakes and I'd like to call on you wise bloggers out there to put me straight on any of your findings and expert advice.
I have a completely standard RS6 and each time I've been to my Audi dealer for a service, I comment on the very 'AVERAGE' braking performance I feel I have on my car. The RS6 is an 04 model with 46,000 miles on her. She's had the same dealers history from new on all servicing issues and it's had all the relevant disc & pad inspections as well as a fresh fluid change. The car doesn't pull to the left or right and I've been assured that everything is OK.
However, I'm sure that it's not me being paranoid by saying that the brakes don't have the 'BITE' that I would expect to have on a car of this size / performance.
Everytime I touch or hit the brakes, they do work, but they don't scrub off speed how I want them too. I mean, I'd like to be afraid of touching the pedal, or at least know that if I stand on the pedal with both feet, I risk being thrown through the windscreen!!
So why is it that I reckon my brake pads are made of Pine wood, rather than sintered materials? I've had to learn how to drive this car, as it does reward if driven in a specific way, but if I'm approaching roundabouts at 3 figure speeds, the braking really has to be done at an early stage, as there are times when I've literally thought of opening my door and using the heel of my shoe to help it slow down.
My question to the wise amongst you is, can you relate to this and what have you done to cure it?
For example, are the RS6+ drilled discs I have are man enough for the job and I just need a set of aftermarket pads such as EBC Yellowstuff, or do I need to go the whole hog and buy another brand with matched pads to get the response and feel I want?
I welcome all comments and would be interested to know what you all have done in terms of testing different pads/disc combinations to get that real race car feeling and confidence with the brakes.
Kindest Regards,
Chris Webb.
