rattle on start up

Post by bayliner » Mon Oct 08, 2007 8:40 pm

Hey guys anyone have this problem, when my 6 has sat for more than 3 days there is a horrible rattle for 2-3 seconds on start up, Audi dealer in Dundee says normal as oil will have drained from top of engine needs a few seconds to pump oil back up, lame excuse I think, any 1 else have this, full Audi warranty does not apply as there is nothing broke yet, also some blue smoke on start up but lots if you hit the go pedal right away, quite embarrassing when there are people about, reminds me of my dads old allegro
Cheers

Out of interest, how many miles has the car done?

Mine is similar, even if I have just left it for a day. When you start her, the revs rise to about 1500 instantly and you hear the ticking and then steady again back to 800ish with no ticking. I believe it is normal and is the oil thing priming the valves (I think they are valves)???!!!

I was thinking the same thing but was wondering if his valve seals were going.

It doesn't have to be broken for them to fix under warranty. If the car isn't running right (internal oil leak) then they need to find the reason and fix. Could be something simple, but it's worth getting it sorted.

Well, your seals shouldn't be leaking then! ;-) Seriously though, whilst they might not be able to fix the rattle on startup, they should trace and fix the source of the burning oil when cold.

Hi Dundee Audi have had it 3 times for the fault, but they say its also because the oil the 6 uses is a lot thinner and its normal for some blue smoke, and they say try not to kick it from cold

Um that sounds like b0ll0cks to me. Mine doesn't chuck out blue smoke or smell like it's burning oil when stone cold. She's done 40,500 miles.

Maybe we should all be using thicker oil.... hmmm. :biggrin2:
