to turbocharged cars having lived the imported japanese experience. Looking for something a bit more bigger to ferry my two mangy boxers around and came down to 2 choices, the cayenne turbo and the RS6. Ive already done some research on the porsche, poor mpg, no maintenace pack etc etc and an acquired look but a genuine SUV that handles like a 911 cant be sniffed at. Then theres the RS6, i`m aware that its more of a cruiser and TBH i`ve grown out of the traffic light dash etc so the handling really isnt a worry ( i know not as involving as it could be) however, i cannot decide between the 2.
Some questions please if no-one minds

1) has anyone driven both, if so whats their experience/advice?
2) Whats the deal with the full maintenance, can it be added to second-hand cars if bought from stealers sorry dealers, is there a mileage limit, does it have to be on new
3) where can one get classifieds for modified audis, e.g AMD, MTM etc etc.

I can't help you with your questions i am afraid, but i can say this.......DONT buy an RS6 expecting it to be economical, because it just wont be. I get 16mpg average....20mpg on a run down the motorway at 85ish. Around town you can expect it to drop into the low teens....i don't know what the economy of the Porsche is in real terms, but it must have to go some to be worse than the RS6. Also bear in mind big running costs with consumables .... like £1500 for new discs and pads asuming you buy them well from the correct source....lots more through main dealers, and there is the DRC issue that seems to crop up regularly with RS6's and is an expensive one to fix. :shock:

Having said all of that, the cars are without doubt a very good all rounder, i don't think that they would come out top at any one thing, apart from probably load lugging at speed, but i would say that they are near the top on just about everything, which is something you can't say about many cars. They are just a good all round car, which when it has been tweaked here and there does have the ability to produce some very big smiles. :D

I considered a Cayenne Turbo also, but not long enough to actually drive one.

Two points:

1. You need to drive an RS6 because you are believeing the hype and it's way better to drive than you are giving it credit for. I drove an S4 cab (54 plate) between putting a deposit on my beast and collecting it and the S4 has the completely dead (and overly light) steering Audi are slated for. The RS6 doesn't; it's meatier and has communication. It's not the best going, but it's far from horrific. I seriously doubt that the Cayenne will be any better in the handling and driving feel department.

2. I happened to catch part a rerun of an old Top Gear last night when Clarkson was driving the Cayenne Turbo and he likened it to an RS6 in feel. He meant that as a compliment to the Cayenne as it has even more weight and higher centre of gravity to contend with.

All that said I agree with Tweaky - an RS6 is not a cheap car to run and I genuinely doubt that the Cayenne could be noticeably more expensive. Then again my ultimate decision against the Cayenne was because I don't need an off-roader so why buy one? The fact it would blatantly get in the faces of the enviromentalists was actually a plus for me, but the fact it was always going to be much harder to get it to handle was a big factor. Plus they are more expensive to buy and it seems from your questioning that money matters to you as it does to most of us.

Take it from me stick with the RS6, much better car!
Cayenne is very expensive to run and maintain, eats tyres, eats brakes and drinks fuel

On the plus size it has got a bigger cabin space and some great toys in it
Seems cheaper on brakes then the RS6 and servcing is every 20k ranging from £444 - £847

Turbo S is a wicked bit of kit being a cool 520 BHp and tons of Torque to match

and brakes aint that exspensive if ya give me a call...thats genuine Audi parts too...time to talk to PhilT about a trade RS logo me thinks...

Hi Cfcdoc

I have to admit that I'm suprised that others get such poor MPG. I drive 10 miles to work - mixed fast dual carriageway and urban, usually get a real 20 mpg, creeps up to 22 - 24 out of town (90-100) on Mways (overseas obviously;) . Couldn't do more and retain licence.

Competent servicing can be had relatively reasonably (APS Brackley).

Discs and pads can be had for more reasonable money if you ask around here. Tyres gradually seem to be getting more reasonable, wheels aren't as flimsy as some (original RS4 were very vunerable).

Never liked the P-Wagen, big and ugly (makes a good windbreak if you follow one though)

What else - mines for sale. PM me for details if you are interested.

Why did you choose the RS6, i would imagine the cayenne is just as quick is it not?
She may be big and heavy but its whats on the inside that counts.....

Cayenne Turbo is quick but in a different way, sounds strange but it weighs a ton more then the RS6 as aerodynamic as a barn, the cayenne has the power mid range were the RS is from the word GO :)

I have driven loads of Cayenne and wouldn't swap it for the RS they loose money like they drink fuel too

I also get very good economy from the RS6 so it's definitely possible. Depends on driving style of course - I get good economy from everything I drive.

Hi cfcdoc,

By full maintenance do you mean you pay a fixed amount each month/year which covers servicing, consumables, the lot? IF so then I am sure they will offer it, but it will be very expensive as it will obviously be subject to main dealer part prices. I wouldnt go with this, as like people say genuine parts can be sourced cheaper and so can servicing, consumables etc.......I would be interested to know if you get a price - a quick call to a dealer should answer this??!!

BTW I also get good fuel economy around 23-25 on a 100mile mainly motorway 80-100mph journey.

23-25mpg my god i had better go in search of a lighter pair of shoes. I am looking at about 200 - 220 miles out of a tank, 260 on a run if i am relatively steady.
