Indicators Failed

Post by Rich_C » Thu Aug 03, 2006 1:07 pm

My indicators decided to pack up on me yesterday morning on the way to work. After being paranoid on the drive home not being able to signal my intent to other road users (I'm obviously not cut out to be a stereotypical BMW owner  ) I popped in to my local dealer to get it fixed. They sorted me out straight away with a new relay box (the indicator relays & hazard warning relays share the same box that sits behind the hazard warning light button). Apparently it's a common fault on A3's & A4's so they tend to carry plenty of replacement relays in stock - charge should have been £19.99 plus 30 minutes labour but they're going to try and put it through as a claim on my extended warranty.

Just thought I'd report it to you guys for future reference - plus for once it was an example of a dealership fixing an easy problem quickly and efficiently without any fuss … quiet applause please.

Rich.

(The sound of one hand clapping)

So that's another common fault we have to look forward to? Nice.

I had this happen recently. It was the stalk indicator switch. The mechanic told me that this is quite a common problem as dirt gets in to the switch.

Relay went on my old A6, just a couple of weeks before the RS arrived. The relay on my wife's A2 failed earlier this year. Three to four years seems to be the typical life of the relay.

The only cars which don't have probs with the hazard switch (which is the same unit with different button heads on the front, or in the case of the A2 8Z a blank end), are the A4 8E & 8H , the switch only has two wires feeding J519 power supply module and two earths, the A8 4E new A6 4F & A3 8P and Q7 4L.
