Launch Control

Post by mwcltd » Wed Mar 01, 2006 8:37 pm

I found recently that my RS6+ with MTM Stage 2 upgrade has a launch control. If you hold both of the gearbox flippers back, put your foot on the brake, put your foot flat on the throttle then release the brake it sets off like a scolded cat. Lots of fun at traffic lights especially if a 911 or 360 is next to you.

I was told at time of purchase that the process was to- keep your foot hard on break, take the revs up to 4k to 5k revs and then release the breaks... I am intrigued what the gearbox paddles do, any ideas??

Does this apply to the "normal" RS6 as well as the PLUS?

sounds fun... so is this in Drive? then pull paddles back together, floor it and release the brake? then let go of the paddles?

Idiot proof instructions please!

The RS6 or + does not have true launch control, only the double clutch boxes (DSG) as in the TT V6 have true launch control, however you can to a degree replicate this just by standing on the brakes, taking the revs up to around 3500rpm & then releasing the brakes.

This can be done in D or S, but seems slightly more effective in S.

Tried this during the Audi Driving Experience last year (thought it best to try in someone elses RS6 first). Only ever done it in my car at VMAX events & it's fairly effective, although i think the mechanical longevity issues would stop me doing it often.

Beware - on the M3, the launch control can be used 4 times, then its new clutch time...

Not sure that's entirely true, the M3 & CSLs at Prodrive have used launch control far more than that without any clutch problems. I know the dealers will check if you have problems with your clutch slipping to see how many launch contols you have done and will then decide if they will change under warranty or not. Nearly all CSls are having clutch slipping problems after 6,000 miles and dealers are trying to get out of fitting new ones under warranty. This is a problem that is being caused by SMG11 where the software is not taking into account the gradual wear in the clutch lining. All of the clutches that have been inspected have had hardly any wear in them whatsoever. At the moment there are some owners that have already had two new clutches fitted after only 12,000 miles but the problem now facing them is that the car is fast approaching three years old and soon out of warranty. It seems BMW do not at the moment have a fix for this problem other than replacing the clutch assembly.
