Hello gang,
Been a long time lurker and finally thought to say hello!
As my handle suggests I’m massively into my Datsun Z cars and own a very “period” modified 260z - putting out 245BHP and 233lbft out of a 45 year old 2.8 straight 6 and weighing about 1,150kg. Taking hot hatches like the Focus RS by surprise is a fun hobby!!
The stable also has a 3.0TDi Q5 torque monster and a B7 A4 Avant 3.2 S-line.
The B7 is getting long in the tooth and while I was millimetres from buying an impeccable B8.5 S4, I realised that yes it may be a better daily driver and with a Revo map / pulley as quick as the RS. But on the test drive, I found it effortlessly capable and dull in equal measure, with a very apologetically muffled self-conscious sound track - my totally stock 3.2 is way more sonorous.
So then I realised that the RS has truly gotten under my skin!!!! I’m currently looking at a 40k miler with perfect history and perfect everything else (including sports exhaust, diff, etc and according to my 8 year old most important is the heated rear seats). The only thing missing from the options list is B&O, which I don’t think I’ll need with the mating call of the V8. The blue is definitely the right colour for me.
The thing that scares me the most is the cost of brake discs and potential DRC repairs. I plan to keep this car for the next 5-7 years, doing 4-5k miles / year - so it becomes a consideration.
What advice do you have for me regarding DRC repairs if required and realistic prices / places in the UK for brake discs?
I’m super handy with spanners and VCDS + with a lift and engine hoist at home, there is little I can’t do myself (although most of the time I prefer to pay my trusted mechanic).
The cost of the rest of the stuff like diff services, fuel or tyres etc is frankly irrelevant to me. It’s just those two items holding me back from dropping the best part of £30k on a beautiful piece of road art.
Please talk me into it :p
Ps. Here’s the Z …
