B7 RS4 Oil Level and other dumb questions

Post by sjjhr » Sun Nov 08, 2015 6:09 pm

Greetings, I just bought a 56 RS4 Avant as had always wanted to try one. I have some REALLY dumb questions as this is a very different beast from my Integrale.
1. should oil be showing on the dipstick when the car is not running and cold? The manual is vague on this: it says let the warm engine run at idle then wait 2 mins...but nothing about where the oil should be when it's standing there not running!
2. What should be showing in my check system when I run through it? I have a service indicator and TPRS showing because one of the valves isn't communicating apparently, but nothing more about when it's due a service.
3. The exhaust sport valves are jammed shut so have left some WD40 on them all day and tried to gently free with a screwdriver point and handle but nothing yet
4. Can anyone recommend a decent independent in SW London/Surrey please? Audi tell me I'm only due a service next year but I'm going to have it looked at right now so it starts off properly with me.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the fold and FON rule 1

I'll try and help with your questions

1. Yes you should be able to see oil on your dipstick when the engine is not running and cold, best way to do it in my opinion as all the oil has dropped to the sump so theoretically gives a more accurate reading.

2. Service indicator can be reset via an independent garage, what is the mileage from the last service till now ? Most forum members prefer a 10k service schedule or once per annum as opposed to the long life that Audi promote.
TPMS is tire pressure monitoring system, you have 1 in each wheel, or should have. It could either need resetting or you have a faulty one. You won't know until you take the tyre off as it sits on the back of the vavle.

3. Exhaust valves, as your doing really

4. Can't help with an independent down London / Sureey area. However MRC in Banbury are regarded as the best Audi specialists around.

Good luck
Nick

I appreciate your quick reply thanks. Last serviced by an independent exactly one year and 7k miles ago for replacement oil coolers and pipes, and oil service. I guess it's a trip to MRC to get everything essential done then. Most people seem to rate them.

General servicing such as oil change and the like can be done at a local independent or your local Audi dealer, you may be able to provide your own materials, ie, oil or plugs helps reduce a bit of the costs.

Anything major such as clutch or carbon clean or any tuning go to MRC

thanks for the suggestions. Have now discovered all the places you guys have known about for years, Unit 20, MRC, MDM - has anyone used JKM in Portsmouth, or VolksAutos by the way?

I now have a lot of quotes for new front discs and pads, servicing etc, if anyone wants to compare? Interesting that some of them are higher than main dealer!

Stoke Audi are generally best priced for front discs if your after originals, some main dealers do seem cheaper that independents I suppose that depends on where you live.
