Hello - Wanting a S3 or S4

Post by Rav76 » Mon Nov 14, 2011 1:53 pm

Hi All - I have just joined the forum today after posting a question about S3's and S4's on Pistonheads. :biggrin3:

I am a Porsche fan through and through, however, having 3 cars is not practical at the moment and i am hoping to combine fun and sensible motoring into an S3 or S4 Audi.

My current situation is that i have an Audi A4 1.9tdi (B6) that will happily give me 50+mpg on a motorway run. My wife has a VW Touran 2.0 tdi to ferry the children to/from school and clubs and i have a 1986 Porsche 944 turbo to use at weekends for fun motoring. I used to commute 120 miles a day to/from work and that made the 1.9tdi B6 shape A4 a real god send, but i have just found employment 27 miles from home.

My plan is to sell the A4 and 944 turbo and buy a S3 or perhaps S4. I love the B6 shape, but cant help feeling that the 4.2 V8 is really too thirsty. The 2.7 Bi turbo is getting a little long in the tooth now, so an option is the S3 on a 2002 or 2003 registration. This will be fun and economical as its a 1.8T. I will need reasonable size rear seats in case the car is used to ferry the little ones.

Is my thinking in line with consensus or am i barking mad? All opinions are welcome as i am in the process of selling my Porsche.

V8 may be thirsty, but V8 noise is hard to beat.

I have had an S3 from new in 2000, it easily makes 280 bhp with a remap and does 30mpg. Great fun and very good in the rain and snow. I get 13 -18 mpg from the RS4, the S4 is about the same.

Hi Rav,
How old are the kids?

I owned a 2002 S3 (remapped) for 3 years and a B6 S4 (auto) standard for 18 months.

The S3 done my head in with my son as he was a newborn. Tight parking spaces, a car seat and two doors don't go in my opinion. It was a good laugh to drive though.

Personally I'd go for the S4 if the kids are very young and you use your car for them. You love the shape, it's a good motor, more space.

I only drive 7 miles to work, I do all the weekend driving and I still fill up once a week, same as the S3 did.

My RS4 is also tuned.
Shane

Thanks for the replies. Kids are 8 and 6 years respectively and still use full size car seats. I have been to see a S3 today and the rear seats are far too small.
I think that you are right, i need the B6 shape S4, but will need to find a fuel card too.

At the moment, i will sit and absorb information from you all.

1.8t are a great engine but once you hear the V8 fuel consumption etc goes out the window

get one now before fuel is 3 quid a litre
