Help required - RS4 Battery keeps draining

Post by N11LS_J » Thu Aug 25, 2011 4:34 am

Guys

I'm really getting frustrated with this now, a few months ago, my B7 RS4 battery went flat due to the interior light being left on, the car was jump started via the 'jump points' under bonnet, gave it a few long runs and seemed fine for a couple of days, then after 4-5 days of not being driven, battery went completly flat, no lights on dash or anything.
At this point I thought best to change the battery so fitted a Bosch heavy duty battery, since then the problem is still there, each time the car is left standing for mor than 5-6 days, i come back to a flat battery, so something is obviously drawing power for it to go from fully charged to dead in a matter of days.

I have access to Vagcom and a multimeter, any ideas??

At the moment i'm having to top up the charge via a trickly charger, but really want to sort this without giving it to Audi or similar to investigate.

The problem seems to have arised since the initial flat battery, perhaps when i jump started I got a power spike on one of the circuits?

Once the battery is fully charged, everything seems to be working fine

Just get a new battery. Sounds like the typical Audi battery knocking on death's door. I use Varta batteries in both of mine.

Even the best batteries only come with a 5 year warranty, which means the batteries on most RS4 are now near or past their end of warranty date - but you say you've fitted a new Bosch battery so it may not be that.

Many electronic modules are permanently powered and should switch off under command from CAN bus messages, if they don't this can be a cause of flat batteries.

One version of the Bluetooth phone module is know to have a fault that can cause this so that's where I'd start.

Phil, yep I've already tried the new battery route, I've got a heavy duty Bosch but still no joy

Dave, thanks for that, Vagcom doesn't bring up any major errors, however does show error on radio, so I put my meter on and it showed a steady 13.87v but then voltage started to dip slightly even though everything was off, I then pulled the fuse for the radio, and the voltage began to creep back up!
Have I sourced the problem!!? The RNSE somehow drawin power?

Don't let yourself be fooled - the RNS-E draws power from the moment you unlock the car until either you lock the car or 30 minutes after the ignition goes off (whichever happens first).

Right, so i need to simulate battery drainage in the cars locked state?

Attach meter, with radio fuse replaced, lock car and monitor meter after initial 30 minutes?

Then do the same again but this time with the fuse pulled for the radio?

Thisng is, I have Digital TV too, which has stopped working since the first time i jump started the car, not sure if this is just a coincidence, or the TV reciever has a part to play in the battery drain, i'm also assuming the fuse for both the RNSE and the TV Receiver is on the same fuse? The Digi TV was retro-fitted by previous owner so i'm not aware how it was wired in, Vagcom showing following for radio and TV

No need to wait 30 minutes after locking, the 30 minutes is after ignition off but if you lock the car the RNS-E turns off straight away. So measure the current a minute or so after locking.

Sounds a bit too much of a coincidence...

Looks like the TV tuner has a CAN bus problem - which might mean it's not seeing the switch off message and could be the cause of the power drain.
