RNS-E upgrade question

All
I was wondering whether anyone could tell me if this was possible and what I need to do it.
I've just bought an A3 S-line (2006) that has the Sat Nav Plus already installed. Problem is that the chap who had it simply want the SatNav and so there's no 6-disc changer. So question is . . .
Can I just get the Audi iPod connection fitted and if I do will I still get track names etc through the head unit and the DIS? If not, what do I need to fit? AMI?
Also, the car doesn't have the multi-function steering wheel at present. Has anyone ever retro fitted one of these?
Any advice would be much appreciated. Cheers.

You can get the Dension gateway 100 ISO (can bus version) which will display tracks in the DIS, but not on the head unit.
Steering wheel is fairly straight forward, but your SCSM (steering wheel controller) must support the new MFSW or it needs to be changed for one that does. Does your car have criuse?

No cruise control unfortunately. Wanted to keep Audi parts if possible. I've heard the AMI will fully integrate the iPod with track names in the head units. Or was the salesman talking tosh? I know the AMI is £399 but I'd rather stick with genuine Audi bits as long as they do the job.
Thanks for the pointer on the steering wheel. Do you know where I can buy a steering wheel and how much I should be paying? Ideally I'd like the flat bottomed one! Is the SCSM expensive?

The AMI is not compatible with your car which is why I suggested the Dension as it is the only solution that will provide track information at a reasonable price. The AMI is only for new A4/A5/A6/A8/Q5/Q7 and brand new 2010 A3/TT/R8 with the 2010 nav units fitted.
So you are stuck with a rubbish Audi Ipod interface with no track information at all or the Dension which will display track names in the DIS only and allow browsing of your Ipod and charging of the latest Ipod/Iphones.
Flat bottomed stups will be expensive, expect to pay around £5-600 for a decent FB wheel & airbag, plus a controller for another £130 and then some fitting.

Pretty limited then. Presumably the 'round' MFSW will be a little less?
Craig, I'll give you a call re getting the Denison fitted once I've had a look at them on the internet.
Many thanks for your advice.

How did you get on? I have the rubbish iPod connection in my RS4 and it just dispalys tra ck numbers; absolutely useless and I hardkly ever use it (use Sd cards instead) Was not told about htis rubbish interface when I ordered it in the car. Had I known ...anyways is there any way to upgrade so that I can see album info on the 7" display?

Not directly.
If you replace the Audi iPod interface with the Dension Gateway 100 (see craigyb's post earlier in this thread) you can get track information on the DIS, but not on the RNS-E.
The only way to see album/track information on the RNS-E screen is to use an Alpine KCE-425i(IIRC) plus a multimedia interface (e.g. Kufatec IMA Plus) which will make the iPod video appear on the RNS-E screen - and you'll also have to have the VIM (Video In Motion) software hack done to your RNS-E so that the screen doesn't blank when you're driving.
