FM reception

Post by MoRS6+ » Fri Dec 04, 2009 4:55 pm

Stumbled across this youtube video of some bloke in Welwyn Garden City flicking through FM to find 'certain' *cough* stations and he finds loads - clearly (no pun intended), the FM reception is very good on the newer Audi head units (is this one in the video MMI?)

I have an RNS-E from 2004 and the FM reception is not brilliant. I like to listen to 'certain' stations as I love dance/oldskool/drum'n'bass and considering I'm slightly closer to London than this guy in WGC, can't seem to get very good FM reception. In fact, recently I'm having trouble staying locked on to Kiss100 which is a major station.

So, do I have a problem with an amplifier, problem with the aerial or just not very good FM reception/AFT electronics on a 2004 RNS-E?

I think you might be answering your question yourself...

Hi Dave, is there any easy way to eliminate where the problem might be? I know it sounds like I'm kinda answering my own question, but I didn't know if it was just Kiss100 downgrading/downsizing their FM or something silly like that as I know many stations are going DAB now. I know this sounds a bit daft, but is there any method to test your reception levels like you can on a Sky digibox?

Basically, I know you have the new 200(9/10?) RNS-E and was wondering what your FM reception is like on it? Is it better than the older RNS-E you had before it?

Also, one last question - what unit is in the car in the youtube link above? And what car/aerial is it?

Sooo many questions I know, but just want to try to get to the bottom of this as it's getting a bit annoying now - even more so when I saw the link above as I'm about 5 miles nearer to London than the chap in the link above! Many thanks mate.

There's 3 radio test menus in Engineering Mode, which may help you out?

Exactly the same as before - excellent. I can listen to South Coast local radio stations as far as the Camberley area on the M3, and to Radio 2 as far south as Rouen in France.

Looks like MMI 2G Basic in an A6 to me - could be wrong though.

But he does mention he's at a "fairly high point" - which means he will have less obstructions like hills and high buildings.

Ok, thanks Dave. Good answers as always.

Seems like I've got some eliminating to do - oh joy of joys..
