Hi.

I've just bought an RS6 (2002) and am loving it. Looks like I should have paid a bit more attention to the electronics before I bought it though, instead of messing around under the car looking for leaky dampers!

Anyway, I'm getting the following message from the RNS-D display:

"Connection to rds-tmc tuner is faulty or could not be established"

Steering wheel buttons don't work. Center console "menu" button and twisty knob similarly inactive.

TV works fine, as does CD player. It won't pick up any FM stations.

No radio information on dash display.

Does anyone have any ideas? Any help would be much appreciated.

Is this a stupid question? For someone used to 12V positive and negative, the whole CAN bus thing is a bit confusing... Does anyone know of a basic tutorial?

The TMC tuner is not just a TMC tuner - it's also a CAN bus converter that sits between the RNS-D/TV tuner and the rest of the car. Which explains why the TV and CD player work, but FM stations and steering wheel buttons/DIS display don't work.

You need a replacement TMC tuner.

Could be just an electrical fault. I lost the use of my MFSW controls a year or 2 ago and was thinking of replacing the TMC. I started to troubleshoot it myself but I had a dashpod fault which was draining my battery so in the end I handed it to my local stealer to solve. They replaced the pod, but the MFSW problem was actually due to a short in the wiring. I'm not sure about the RS6, but in the B5 the TMC/Can Gateway is right behind the knee bolster on the drivers side. Easy to open up and check the connections.

Thank you both for the replies. I swapped out the TMC canbus module and everything suddenly just started working perfectly. I never thought it would be so easy.

I wonder why these TMC modules fail so often. I took the broken one apart and couldn't see anything obviously wrong with it... burned components, etc.

While I had the dash off, I discovered some pretty weird stuff... Anyone have any idea what this is:



It was screwed on the other side of the TMC module. Can't be standard, surely? The name would suggest something bluetooth.

Any clues would be much appreciated!

Sounds like some kind of aftermarket bluetooth module...

I think that domain is just coincidence. I'll have to attempt to trace the wiring and find out where it goes...

I also found some kind of tracker system behind the glovebox. It has some kind of antenna cables that go to the front bumper and a green LED on the box.

If I disconnect any of the connectors, the car won't start! This is a bit worrying. I presume it's cutting the fuel pump and possibly some other circuits. Not sure whether to leave well enough alone or try and remove it.

If you've still got the old module you might want to hang onto it as it may still work - so you may have a spare / saleable part....

I've had the exact same issue in my RS4 B5 and after trawling the forums and making a call to a specialist electrical business ended up taking some advice which was: "Take the relevant fuse out that supplies power to the TMC Module for 10 mins then put it in again - that'll reboot the unit."

I did - it worked! (Actually I took about 4 fuses out as I wasn't sure which it'd be and I wanted to nail it) Couldn't believe such a simple solution actually worked.

I had tried to reboot several times with the fuse and by disconnecting the battery. Sadly, no luck.

I might try it again next time I've got the dash open just in case it starts working again!

I installed an RNS-D into my B5 a few months ago. I know I am a bit behind the times and had it sitting in the cupboard for over a year.

However, I am assuming my car does not have a TMC tuner due to reporting this fault.

Would anyone have one they are willing to sell me who has upgraded to an RNS-E or know of where to buy one?

I don't know if it's possible to turn the TMC off. Have a look in the hidden menu:

Thanks, that looks like what I need, although I was hoping to get one for less than 125 euro but I will consider it.

I would appreciate instructions on how to connect the TMC tuner up to the RNS-D and DIS if you have them.
