Wondering if those freeview boxes for sale on ebay realy would be "plug & play" with an RNS-E unit or am I being a bit dense ?

No, they are definitely not plug n play

You will need some kind of interface (Kufatec), which will connect to the 32pin grey connector behind the RNS-E unit

You'll also need the aerials for the Freeview box.
