I´m planning to upgrade my ´99 S4 Avant´s sound system.
I`ve decided to start by replacing c**p oe speakers with component system at front.
Which make and size of speakers do you recommend? Any experiences with speaker pockets (Phonocar)? What kind and type of speakers for the rear doors are the most suitable (sound-wise) with component system at front?

Look at Focal-JM Lab or Infinity as the real sound choice, otherwise i believe that Alpine do some reasonable stuff.

I went down this route two years ago with my A3. I used Alpine component ( sorry didn' keep the details but with an adapter 13cms fitted in the door with a separate tweeter in the factory place. I thought much improved so I didn't bother with the rears ( and I would have needed an amp ! ).
I must add I like reasonable sounds but no way am I a car hifi person. Her A4 has Bose and I'm inclined to think it is over rated, plenty of volumne and bass short on higher frequencies.
Start at the front. I have read that you may need extra amps if you upgrade the rear doors and more . I paid about £100 for my speakers.

If your going to replace the front speakers you should run them through an amp, it will sound even better if you do! Also, you would be better off spending double on the front componants and forgetting rears, because if the fronts are good, the rears will be pointless. With componants you really get what you pay for, so pick a good make and spend as much as you can on them! Take a look at Focal or Planet Audio.

If you did want to finish the system off a boxed sub in the boot will add some nice bass for you and you will have a nice complete system.

Hope this is usefull.
