Bose replacement speakers

Ive got a front one that sounds a fluffy until warmed up,so fancy changing them maybe going a little larger at the same time,is the bose set up 2 ohm or 3 ohm i cant remember? Ive seen some 2ohm JBL stuff on fleabay,Anyone here done it?Did you use components and swap the tweeters aswell?

I have the same problem especially when wet weather,replacing mine with 4 ohm 125cm components in the front with adaptor plates and replacing rear door speakers with some 100cm co-axial two way mb-quarts left over from my car hi-fi competition days.these should be ok for the Bose amps to drive they will just have to work a little harder,there is more choice and better quality for the price in 4 ohm rather than original 2 ohm speakers.

How did you get on? ive just ordered some 4" boston to replace the fronts as there are no adapter plates avail to go any bigger

I got adapter plates from car audio direct ( 99 S4 bose,£9 ) and some JBL gto 507 c 2ohm speakers from iceclearout on ebay for £47 but not had chance to fit yet,the speakers are 5 -1/8 inch diameter and should go straight in with the adapters.

Not impressed with the bostons maybe i expected too much from a small speaker,so im going to order jbl and adapter plates,watch this space

Me too, one rear went a while back and the front passengers cuts out every so often now ...

I've got a rear gone - the driver's side. If anyone's putting in the whole kit, can they let me know if they're selling off reasr speakers...

Fitted the JBL 2 ohm kit today,easy to do with the spacer ring adaptors for the mids,the tweeters are held in place by a spring clip,removed old and trimmed down JBl star mount to suit then used original clip to secure but had to drill a new hole for clip as new arrangement slightly taller,all wired up and crossover placed in the door panel dip/valley above original wiring connector blocks as fowls on door strenghteners if mounted elsewhere,the wiring is easy from the crossover to the speakers,to supply I cut the green/black and black wires and crimped on bullet connectors,then connected the black to positive and green /black to negative, this gave the correct phasing front to rear as I had connected black as negative and it sounded a bit out of sorts,the rears have not been changed as no problems with them so far,but they must be dual cone unit and sound very dull copared to the JBL's up front although they are louder for a given volume when equally faded.
The original Bose unit that was farting was found to be knackered due to the voice coil rubbing against the magnet.
The new front speakers are good considering the cost and I would recommend this kit to anybody with fluffy farting knackered front speakers.

Cheers for the info mate, I think I might do the same as what you have done ... I have had a look for these speakers on ebay, but not sure what I am looking for! they come back with difference sizes? 13/16cm etc?

Could you recommend any rear speakers as well??

Can I assume I just need to change the speakers? I have the BOSE system, so, I can just use the existing speaker wiring to the doors etc???

I have a 'farting' rear BOSE speaker (drivers side as well...). Would be interested in knowing what quality speakers are available as a direct replacement....

I fitted the the jbl to the front but couldnt get the adapter plates to fit,i would be very interested in how you did it,using them the correct way round they fouled the foam suspension bit of the speaker,chopped trimmed and tried using them upside down but no good,ended up making adapter plates out of mdf it took many attempts and very time consuming,the crossover needs to be carefully positioned on the door card to clear the doors structure,I bought the full range (normal) version aswell and am tempted to try one of those as the component set up is better in the mid and upper areas but lacks the warmth of the bose speakers,i added a load more sound deadening while i was in there to try and improve sound quality

With regards the tweeter install i fitted it without any mounts its a snug fit just using the origonal clip to retain it.

When the JBL's were fitted to the adaptors I thought they would fowl on the foam surrounds but on closer inspection there was sufficient clearance,although the speakers dont actually seal against the adaptors and likewise the adaptors dont fully seal against the door panel which I will sort at a later date,for now though no farting = 85% improvement as I have to admit the bass is not fantastic but it is a work in progress,would be interesting to hear the difference changing the rears makes,I wonder if more power goes to the rear speakers ? my tweeters moved a bit in the original location on their own so used the mounting hardware supplied.

I fitted the 13cm JBL GTO's to the front of my car and found that the connection block fouled on the door trim, so had to insulate it with some electricians tape. The adapters fit fine if you get them the right way around (took me several attempts), but there again, I'm not trying to squeeze a 16cm speaker into a 13cm hole (the 16cm adapater are meant for the B6 and above A4 range).

I find the JBL's to be very 'bright' and seriously lacking in bass - maybe I need to altering the phasing on them??
