Phatbox whine like unsuppressed ignition noise & mountin

Post by Fen » Mon Jul 30, 2007 9:39 pm

As title fitted my Phatbox last week and used it for the first time on Saturday. In the gaps between tracks there is a whine that rises and falls with engine revs (it's there all the time, but quiet enough you can't hear it most of the time).

It's connected to an RNS-E that I fitted using a eBay adapter harness. I'm thinking it's an earth problem - either through the harness or the Phabox to the chassis. Anyone had it before and fixed it.

On another note I had a quick look at the RS6 fitting guide on Audi's site and it looks like they suggest mounting it in the nearside side panel in front of the removable cover over the CD changer - how do you remove the cartridge if you fit it there?

I get this too on my Phatbox, connected to RNS-D using genuine Audi and Phatnoise cables. Kept thinking it was turbine whine at first! :? No idea as to how to fix it though. Sorry.

Hmm - I had the same with a Dension ICe Link in my 530d and it contributed to my selling it (the Dension, not the car).

I have the genuine Audi cable also and the Phatbox was new when I bought it.

Yes I have it too, and have also asked around. Unfortunately there is no 'known' solution, so if it really bothers you then you'll have to experiment with shielding etc. Personally for me it is not bad enough to worry about.

What about a suppressor in the power feed? Mine does not do this (yet) but my Phatnoise is not very hapy just now for some reason.

Mine does the same, but it's not that bad so I live with it.

Slightly off topic, does anyone know if a 90 degree adapter for the cable plug that goes into the Phatbox is available anywhere? Mine's started playing up a bit and it's because the cable is really tight against the rear quarter panel behind the Phatbox.

Possible dodgy earth connection?
May even be proximity of power feed to the signal cable.

I guess craigb is the man to ask, he does all the sat/nav upgrades so knows his way around car electrics and stuff.

Anyone want to do a boxed solution, if you know what I mean? I just don't have the time these days. (it's the kids!) Presumably we would have to use a round Audi connector?

Just bought a ground loop isolator. I'm going to stop being a lazy git and get my crimpers out (Ohh err missus). If we ever get any sunshine that is.

Wiring in CD Harness:
White = Left
Red = Right
Connection (shielding) in CD Changer Harness (or brown) = Ground

Can anyone confirm this? I wound appreciate it.

Cheers

I took the Phatbox out on Saturday - I'm selling it on as I'm utterly disappointed in it not just because of the whine but because of the stupid synthesised voice that I basically can't make out when announcing about 1 in 3 names.

I'll use SD cards and I bought an FM transmitter for my iPod in case I want to hear anything I don't have on SD.

Good plan, I just can't be bothered to upgrade to an RNS-E for the moment, besides there must be much better double din units out there (full postcode matching, full MP3 support, better sound etc). Can't see that spending over a grand (TV, Phone, RNS-E) would be worth it, and I would rather save up for an uber system worthy of the '6.

At least you have the SD option though! :-)

Hmm, the E feels a lot more than one generation newer than the D and it integrates with the DIS etc. so I'm reasonably happy with it. It would be interesting to see another unit in there by comparison I guess, but I wonder if the next improvement in sound (the E is much better than the D in this respect) comes from upgrading the speakers.
