Strange prob for elecrical gurus!

Post by am8631 » Tue Jul 24, 2007 9:50 pm

Ok, when i installed an aftermarket stereo my keyfob stopped working and i didnt get an alarm if i left my lights on.

I thought i had sorted it when i connected another wire from the loom as everything worked fine although the stereo didnt seem to have a permanent live as it lost its radio stations every time the ignition was turned off.

Tonight i found out that this was due to a fuse blowing, fuse 37 - the radio fuse.

BUT when i put a new fuse in i get the same problem of the keyfob not working and the 'lights on' alarm not working. I tested the perm live and the switched live and they were both showing 12v with the ignition turned off!?!? If i take the fuse out the keyfob works fine but there is no perm live to the stereo and i lose my stations.

The strange thing is that with no fuse at 37 and the igition on both the perm live and switched live show continuous 12 volts. So i can either have the central locking working and a radio that will always lose its settings (no fuse) or put the fuse in and lose the keyfob functions as the car seems to think its still in 'ignition' mode.

This is really starting to make my head hurt :? Can anyone shed any light on what i may have done/not done?

I would rather have the functionality of the key fob and lose my radio stations but there must be a solution so i can have the best of both worlds?

any help much appreciated guys!!

My guess is that your aftermarket stereo is causing the problem by supplying power to 12V switched itself. Can you provide more info about how you wired it up (i.e. the names of the stereo connections and which of the car connections were used for each)?
2001 Silver S4 Avant
AmD remap, APR R1 DVs, APR bipipe, Full Miltek exhaust
H&R coilovers, AWE DTS, Porsche front brakes, Short-shifter, 18" RS4 replicas
Defi-HUD boost gauge / turbo-timer (with afterrun pump modification), Phatbox

i will see what i can do - there are so many wires back there though!!

Im going to find another 12v perm feed into the stereo to see if that cracks it. Will report back as soon as it stops raining enough for me to work on the car!
