Can it be done? How much hard work is it?
I'm used to ripping out standard stereos in my previous cars and replacing the whole lot, but I find that the Bose stereo in the S4 is actually pretty decent, albeit lacking a bit a of clout. Would like to keep things simple and just add an Infinity Basslink or similar, but not sure if this is possible on the standard non-subwoofer Bose setup, can anybody advise? Cheers

RE: Subwoofer into 1998 S4 Avant with Bose but without o.e.
i have a b5 avant and got rid of the bose, and added a stealth sub, 5 channel 450w amp and upgraded door speakers - a completely different world of sound
i removed the bose sub and amp, and plugged into the bose loom where it goes into the amp/sub so no wiring hacks. i ran a new power line and earth for the new amp
tapping into the bose connector gives me line output, remote on etc - i have no problems with whine or interference at all.
the amp and phatnoise went where the bose amp was in the left cubby hole and a built a sub box to fit into the 1/2 wheel well next to the tyre inflator - i used an 8" driver in a 22L internal volume box (bass reflex design) - this isnt earth shatteringly loud or deep but gives a dramatic improvement in volume, sound quality and deeper bass compared to the bose.
i replaced all 4 standard speakers with something decent - alpine coaxial at the back and rainbox components at the front - i used the factory speaker wiring that again runs from the bose amp connector.
