That's mostly correct, if you have all the cards and such from the original purchase you may have a key that has a sticker on you can scratch off to reveal the code you need - if you do you can code the key to the immobiliser yourself.

If you don't have it - the dealers won't and can't tell you what the code is, they don't get to see the code anymore when they code new keys as their system doesn't reveal it. Nowadays it's a 7 digit code, but the code under the sticker is the old 4 digit method IIRC.

Basically, you need to take the car and all the keys you have (not just the new one) and they'll code them all up.

In the meantime, you can register your new key to the car so it'll at least open the doors - the engine will turn and catch but will die straight after.

Wierdly in my experience, if you have vag com hooked up and are trying to program a new key - an uncoded key (to the immobiliser) will actually start the car so you can drive it.

AFAIK this is something the dealer can also do if you have trouble with the immobiliser so you can at least drive the car home whilst awaiting parts or whatever.

Audis are cheaper than women, and when they finally leave they don't take your kids and half your stuff....

Hi,

I'm in the same boat as you. I bought a 3 button remote off ebay, got a blade cut and fitted it. I then coded the key to the central locking system (have you done that?), so that it unlocks the car and deactivates the alarm.

The problem now is the key doesn't start the car because the immobiliser doesn't recognise the key fob. This is the bit that the dealer will more than likely have to sort out. I've searched 246 and there's quite a lot been posted about this previously. Should take about 30 minutes maximum so, at my local dealers rates, will be around £65 plus vat. I believe that in order to code the key fob to the immobiliser, two codes are required, one of which the dealer gets and it changes daily, presumably for security reasons.

HTH, and let us know how you got on.
Mike
