Howto use Concert amplified rear speakers (aftermarket HU)

Post by mattsimis » Sun May 13, 2007 9:45 pm

Ive just spent the weekend gutting the center console of my B5 S4 to install a double din compatible console. Ive hooked up the new headunit (screen and amp integrated, a DWW-6500) (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0102642002) and found I have an issue with the rears.

The Metra branded ISO-Audi harness has a wire for "AMP turn on signal". When this is disconnected, the rear amp doesnt turn on, no sound to rear, fronts fine. When it is connected to the 12v Acc line (no dedicated turn on signal on the HU), the rears are on, but the fronts are muted?

However I should point out the signal from the head unit is already amplified (I put the volume down really low to test the rears).. what can I do to get out of this mess?

You need to find a way of getting a line level output to the rear amplifier from your new head unit.

Till I can figure that out, I piggy backed my speaker level out onto the Audi wiring, using the AMP din connection. Basically disconnected the amp, ran two wires onto the speaker. Oddly, both speakers seem to out put the same channel when doing it this way, but Im not actually that bothered for now (its not like its descrete 4 channel sound anyway).

I notice however that this HU distorts sound very badly when loud.. or maybe its the stock speakers.

I did this at the weekend, i bought a ISO plug so i could connect my pioneer head unit to the wiring loom, the speaker connectors on the brown plug only use the middle 4 which are front.. so i had to find out how the rears work.

i got them working by taking the connector with the blue/green/yellow.. and the rightside one there is markings for RR and RL then there is also a switch looking marked one, the switch would be the remote turn on for the amp.
i ran the remote blue from the head unit to the switch terminal (using the small flat connectors) and then i wired up the rear output RCA from the headunit to 2 wires left and right, then put these to the RR and RL
works a treat, no distortion, good sound.
