Making changes to Bose Upgraded stereo systems

I have specced a Bose upgrade to the Symphony head unit in my new S3, but have been hearing some pretty unsavoury things about the BOSE systems.
As the car has arrived at the dealers its too late to change it.
I have heard there are reliability issues with the bose active drivers, and also heard that the Bose system is quite hard work to remove.
IF the speakers are active, is there an amp in each one, or is there a hidden offboard amp buried somewhere in the car?
Is it an expensive job to get it all removed? Is there significant benefit to uprating the head unit? Thinking of this http://www.alpine-europe.com/content/cm ... e0512ac9b7
Apologies that its a lot of questions but have never seen this kind of set up before.
