Changing the startup screen on your RNS-E

With acknowledgement to Dirk on http://www.navplus.us and to the Ross Tech wiki http://wiki.ross-tech.com/index.php/Aud ... art_Screen

Here's how to change the startup screen on your RNS-E to match your car - It appears to work only with SW 0500 or later (nice to have the RS4 startup screen now!).

The value in Adaptation Channel 018 controls the Startup Screen:

0 = Standard Start Screen
1 = Audi S3 Start Screen
2 = Audi S4 Start Screen
3 = Audi RS4 Start Screen
4 = Audi TT Start Screen

Please note that after changing the startup screen you will need to reboot the RNS-E (save a value of 1 in Adaptation Channel 111 or hold RADIO and SETUP until it reboots).

I guess now we know there are multiple startup screens someone somewhere will be working on custom screens - so S8, S6 & RS6 "specials" might appear.

Hi,

For someone who is almost an electronics illiterate can you give clearer instructions on how this can actually be done. I have just taken delivery of a new RS4 Avant (Cherry black) and I already get the RS4 logo on the small information screen in the instrument cluster but I am assuming that you are talking about changing the startup logo on the larger screen in the central console is that the case? If yes then idiot proof simple walk through instructions on how to do this would be much appreciated.

Do you have VAG-COM?

As MarkB says you need VAG-COM (or to know someone with VAG-COM who can do it for you).

VAG-COM is diagnostic software for VAG group cars that runs on a Windows PC and has a special lead that you plug into the diagnostic socket on your car.

Once you've connected the lead and started VAG-COM on the PC, then switch on the ignition on your car (no need to start the engine).

Then click on the "Select" button on the VAG-COM main screen, then on the "37-Navigation" button, the "Component" box will show something like "RNS-E HIGH EU H70 0500" - the important part is the 4 digit value (0500 in this case), if that 4 digit value is less than 0500 then you need to upgrade the SW on your RNS-E before you can change the startup screen. The easiest way to do this is to wait until your dealer does the free TMC upgrade, since this comes with SW version 0550.

Assuming you have SW 0500 or greater, then click on the "Adaptation - 10" button, change the value in the "Channel Number" box to 18 and click on the "Read" button. The value 00 should appear in the "Stored Value" box. Enter the value you want (as per the table in the first post of this thread) into the "New Value" box and click on "Test". The "Test Value" box should change to the value you entered, then press the "Save" button. Exit back to the main screen and exit VAG-COM. Now on your RNS-E press AND HOLD both the RADIO and SETUP keys for several seconds - the screen will go blank and the RNS-E will restart - showing your chosen startup screen.

Thanks for the rapid response and clear instructions. Unfortunately I do not have VAG-COM or immediate access that I know of (anyone in the Coventry area able to offer help?) to it.

I presume that if it can be changed via the diagnostics then the dealer should be able to make the change for me?

If you tell the dealer exactly what to do then a good dealer will do it for you - at a cost! (unless you can have a word with the technician working on your car when he/she might just do it).

Hi,

Well full marks to my dealer here in Coventry (Listers). I popped in on my way to the supermarket asnd showed them a copy of your clear instructions. They were intrigued because they were not aware that this could be done but put a really helpful technician on it who did it on the spot (5-10mins) with no charge - A result!!

Thanks for letting forum members know about your discovery and for responding so quickly and clearly when queried.

Merry Christams to you and your family.

Result!!!

Full marks to Listers.

As I said in my first post, this was discovered by Dirk over on www.navplus.us and Ross Tech on their wiki - so I mustn't take the credit for their work. But I had to make sure those of us on "this side of the pond" knew about it as well!

Merry Xmas to you and yours too.

@ Dave
Do you have a screenshot of the RS4 start up screen?
I would be interested to see what it looks like.

If this is in the functionality of the unit, why don't Audi code it at the factory???!!

A very good question ......... especially as most UK RS4's came from the factory with SW 0500.

I've taken a picture on my phone (a 228K jpg) but I get loads of errors when I try to attach it.

Well that just has to be done then :mrgreen:

Will probably wait until the TMC update & will see if I can persuade the technician to do it at the same time. :thumbs:
