Problems fitting Audi Sat Nav unit into RS4

Post by chalkz » Thu Apr 20, 2006 7:12 pm

Looking for some help!!!
I have a 2001 X Reg Audi RS4, it had the original Symphony unit in with 6 Disc in the boot.
I have bought a Sat Nav Plus unit from Good Old Ebay and am trying to get it to work, I have plugged it in, all the plugs are used as the oringal unit except a 10 pin red plug which only had a couple of wires going to it. The unit turns on and you can enter the code which I have done, I then get a message in german saying : SAFE - pin nicht angeschlossen, which when i've translated on the net comes out as 'SAFE - pis not connected.
Can anyone explain, do I need to connect something else to the unit or does the unit need coding to the car.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
I have done a similar swap on an R32 and the unit powered straight up and worked perfectly.
Thanks in advance!!!

The only thing I can think of is that the head unit may not communicate with the wiring set-up in your car, this may be so if the new head unit is from a newer model than yours and therefore the electrics wont support it even if all the wires are connected.

I had a similar problem recently. My head unit was warranty replaced over a year ago therefore is newer than the car and will support blue tooth phone system however the original set-up and wiring will not and doesn't recognise the new command facility hence no bluetooth prep for me.

the safe function is some sort of security device, you need to connect a +12v signal to terminal 5 of plug 3 on the back of the nav unit. you can jump this from pin 7 of the same plug. plug 3 is the lower of the 3 plug arrangement where plug one is the one made up of 3 different coloured plugs.

Go to ebay and buy a plug and play cable for about £12 plus postage. this will piggy back into your existing loom and supply all the relevant feeds to the 26 pin connector. the 10 pin connector is not used but a couple of the wires might be depending upon what you want to do.

You will then be able to enter the security code and listen to the radio/ play cd's. as the Nav unit will get all the required power feeds in the right places.

The unit will be in German until you insert a CD rom and change the language to english (Imperial for miles also)

You'll also need to code the unit to your car and tell it certain data via Vag Com or a VW 1551.

Go to http://www.nav-plus.com/instructions/ for all the help a bloke could ever need.

Good luck,

ignore the bit about language and coding

the unit is in english with the latest tmc coded uk disk (original not copy)
and its coded for a uk rs4 with cd changer - it came out of my car..

its coded for bose already and youll need to run the tmc tuner wires to the dis to get any dis display

you may need vag-com or similar to code the instruments though
