Battery drain not resolved.

Post by TWH » Fri Mar 03, 2006 12:15 pm

Ok, following Audi checking the battery and telling me there is a drain even when all Audi electrics are removed, I've now had the other aftermarket electrics that I know about checked and none of htem are putting a drain on the battery. However, the guy checking the other systems noticed some units under the back seat and didn't know what they were. They've got some fairly thick wires coming from them and could well be the source of the drain.

I will take a photo and post it up later in the hope that someone will be able to tell me what they are. But in the mean time, does anyone have any clues as to what kind of electrics get fitted under the back seat?

Ok, I've included the photos of the 3 items that are as yet unidentified. I thought they would be the Bose amps, but the electricals guy who had a look said he'd never seen them and he'd worked on a lot of RS4s.

If anyone recognises any of them or has an idea what they might be, please let me know as I'm getting really pissed about my battery draining the whole time.

This is all of the units under the rear seat:

This is the units on the right closer up:

This is the unit on the left hand side under the seat:

The thick lead here goes into the boot in the right hand side compartment:

the one at the bottom right of the last pic is the speech module. and no, i don't know what it does, and neither does Audi. you might want to get the part numbers off them and google them, that's what i did when i was looking for the aerial amplifier

Soory I can't help - I never realised there was so much kit under the rear seat!

That's very dissapointing that your dealer doesn't know what these items are. They are not exactly small! I take it the Tech is going to educate himself?

It worries me that the Stealership guys don't know the cars as they should. It makes you wonder how much training they actually get. Are the dealerships forced to send at least one guy on a course everytime Audi make a major leap in technology?

Don't answer the above I don't want to take your thread of course I hope you get to the bottom of this...

Not part of a Tracker/Trackstar system is it? Possibly fitted by previous owner and now going wrong?

Or have you had a bluetooth phone system fitted recently that is always "on" rather than ignition switched?

the long black box looks remarkably like a celluler phone system..bit if it is it will have a plug at 1 end that can be removed by undoing the 4 screws that hold 1 end of the box on..take a look good luck and keep us informed... :redrs4:

Navtrack is much smaller.. these look like phone/amplifier boxs with the heat sinks. Certainly not the same under my seat, the standard boxes are headlight height control, ABS/traction Ecu, the others I am not too sure about.

Cheers guys, will take a closer look this weekend and let you know what I find. It's definitely not tracker as they've checked their systems in the car and the tracker guy found the thick wire that goes form one of the units under the seat and wondered what it was. He wondered about them being phone stuff - I've not got any phone equipment but the previous owner might have done.

Had a more detailed look. There are no markings or serial numbers in view at all so that route is blocked at the moment. The 2 long boxes do indeed have 4 torx head screws at the end that the wires go in, so now I have the torx bits I'm going to try and remove the end plate and see if I can unplug them. The only problem is I can see that I wont be able ot get to all 4 screws since it's too tight in there.

I also noted this time that the three boxes are stuck down to the metal with some black gunk rather than being screwed in like the audi components. I'll post more when I've got the backs off the boxes.

Cheers Rob.

If they are stuck down with that black gunk..sounds as though they could be parts of an older style Tracker/RAC or RAC Trackstar. If I remember the Trackstar can have two or three separate boxes...the tracker unit...a mobile phone unit and a battery backup unit. In reality they are supposed to be "permanently" fiixed to the car.

Might be worth a call to RAC Trackstar to see if your cars VIN is regsitered with them?

Ok, got one of the backs off the boxes last night (from the long one on the left hand side), here are a couple of photos in case they shed anymore light:

Ok, first part of the problem solved - I finally got one of the units away from its black gunk - it's NAV TRACK. Phoned them but their technical guys had gone home already. She said that they are told it has its own battery and whould never drain the main battery but who knows. I've disconnected the 2 main units - can't disconnect the 3rd small unit - so I'm going to call them tomorrow. Anyone any knowledge or experience of navtrack?
