Sat Nav Problem - can't fix location

Sat Nav+ can't get a GPS fix on position.

Whilst in the M6 near Stafford last night it thought I was in the middle of the North Sea! (Might as well have been, wouldn't have been going any quicker)

Anyway, anyone else had this problem. I've had a look at the GPS reciever on the roof and there is no visible damage :?

I have experience an occasion when GPS signals were very weak - neither RoadPilot, nor Nav+ could obtain a fix - probably down to atmospheric conditions. However, I was driving between 22.30 and 00.30 on Friday night and had no problem with GPS fixes.

If the problem persists, I would suspect the GPS antenna. Probably the easiest way to prove that would be to extract the Nav+ and attach a separate antenna temporarily.

My roof mounted GPS antenna failed a couple of years ago (same symptoms). Like Peter says, try another antenna - you will need to allow upto 20mins for it find a signal (preferably whilst you're stationary) I changed mine myself - a new antenna was in the region of £40 from vagparts (is yours roof mounted, as my old one has signs of corrosion on the inside?).

My roof mounted antenna was knackered when I bought the car, 2004 RS6, replaced under warranty. Your NAV unit should be able to show you how many sats your receiving.

Says 29 sats available, but none received!

Didn't think there was 29 available at any one time?

The Audi technicians diagnosed my sat nav electronic unit at first, so I got an exchange unit through my warranty company - turned out to be the gps antenna (even though they told me they tried a new one) - I suspect that they didn't allow enough time for the new gps antenna to find it's first fix (it can take upto 20mins for a first fix, possibly even longer) .

I mean £40 versus £900 - I know which I would try first!
