Navi + or not Navi+

Post by eskil » Mon Apr 25, 2005 5:11 pm

Any suggestions on the Nav system, just nice to have? Can they be refitted?

Cheers

Personally I would take the Sat Nav system but if you intend on retro fitting then it would be better to go for an after market unit from eg: Kenwood or Alpine, that way you'll get more up to date features and technology not least more cost-effective  , unless of course you can get the OEM system at a extremely reduced price :?:

This has been covered numerous times before, and the concencus was that it did not actually add any value to the car but that it may make it more saleable in the future. I think we also came to the conclusion that most of the after market units currentlt available were now far more user friendly than indash factory fit unit. This should really be in the electrical thread, and that is where it is headed :thumb:

Just to add - probably the only reason to use SatNav or SatNav+ is the OEM integration (i.e. it looks part of the car and works with the DIS). Both systems are out of date so won't come close to the functionality or value for money of a decent aftermarket system.

For me SatNav is only just over the "nice to have" threshold. You can decide yourself based on how often you drive having to look at a map at the same time. Also if you use motorways a lot, the TMC can be helpful to avoid traffic.

Having refitted SatNav+ and TV myself (and I had a head start because my car is a later model B5 AND came with SatNav so some useful wiring was already in place), I can tell you that it is a fair bit of work and is not cheap (and the two are related depending on how much time you are willing to spend on German e-bay). Therefore I suggest you only consider refitting if you MUST have that OEM look.
